Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
NEW YORK - Seven players with Dubuque Fighting Saints ties have been ranked by NHL Central Scouting for the upcoming 2022 Upper Deck NHL Draft. The list includes four players from this past season's Fighting Saints, one affiliate, one 2022 USHL Phase II draft selection, and one alum who played the 2020-21 season with the club.
"We are excited for the players listed with ties to our program for being named to the final rankings," said General Manager and President of Hockey Operations Kalle Larsson. "These players' hard work and dedication is being recognized, and that is a tremendous thing for our organization."
The following are the Saints listed by NHL Central Scouting, and a short bio about the players:
#4 - C Matthew Savoie (2020-21)
Savoie joined the Fighting Saints at the midway point of the 2020-21 season and was among the league's best goal scorers. He scored 21 goals and 17 assists in 34 games after just turning 17. His exploits were good enough to earn USHL All-Rookie First Team honors. Even playing half of a season, he finished second among USHL rookies in goal scoring. He posted 90 points in 65 games for the WHL's Winnipeg Ice this past season.
#17 - LW Rieger Lorenz (affiliate)
Lorenz, committed to the University of Denver, scored 85 points in 60 games for the AJHL's Okotoks Oilers this past season. He was drafted 14th overall by the Saints in Phase I of the 2020 USHL Draft.
#161 - C Stephen Halliday (2019-22)
Halliday spent three seasons with the Dubuque Fighting Saints and became arguably the best player to ever play for the organization. He is the club's Tier I leader in goals, assists, and points, and the all-time leader in assists and points. He set team records in assists in a single season, and points in a single season. Those exploits earned him USHL Forward of the Week honors on two occasions. Halliday took part in the 2022 BioSteel All-American Game, and scored the game's opening goal. The Ohio State commit also set the record as the USHL's Tier I all-time regular season scoring leader with 215 points total in 215 games. Halliday was named to the USHL's All-Academic team in 2020. Halliday was drafted first overall in Phase I of the 2018 USHL Draft by the Central Illinois Flying Aces.
#169 - D Seamus Powell (2022 Phase II draft selection)
Seamus Powell played two seasons with Team USA's National Team Development Program, and won the silver medal at the World Under-18 Tournament with Team USA. A Boston College commit, Powell was recently selected by the Fighting Saints in Phase II of the 2022 USHL Draft (6th round, 81st overall). Against USHL competition, Powell scored 12 points in 54 games, and finished a plus-4.
#199 - RW Davis Burnside (2022)
Burnside was acquired from the Des Moines Buccaneers by the Fighting Saints on February 25, 2022. He added responsible, two-way play to a stacked offensive group in Dubuque. The Arizona native added 12 points in 21 games as a Saint, and 31 points in 39 games in Des Moines prior. Burnside scored 57 points in 137 games in the USHL after signing a tender with the Tri-City Storm prior to the 2019-20 season.
#209 - RW Connor Kurth (2020-22)
Kurth completed his USHL career as one of the Fighting Saints' most lethal goal scorers in its Tier I history. His 50 career goals ranked tied for the third-most, behind organizational greats Riese Gaber and Halliday. The Minnesotan was named to the 2021 USHL All-Rookie Second Team, and was the 2021 USHL Scholar Athlete as the top student in the league. Kurth took part in the 2022 BioSteel All-American Game and posted an assist on the game's opening goal. He earned USHL Forward of the Week on one occasion. The Minnesota commit was drafted in the 8th round, 111th overall in Phase I of the 2019 USHL Draft.
#19 - G Paxton Geisel (2021-present)
Geisel finished his first season in the league with the third-most wins in the USHL. He finished the season with a 25-9-3/3.13/.897 split in his rookie season to go along with two shutouts. The Saskatchewanian finished the season with the fourth-most minutes played (2,317) among goaltenders in the USHL. He earned the victory for Team Blue with 17 saves on 18 shots in the 2022 BioSteel All-American Game. The Denver commit was a regular in goal with the St. Cloud Norsemen of the NAHL, where he was named to the NAHL All-Central Division Rookie Team.
