Seven In Seven Derails Tornadoes

Worcester Tornadoes News Release

LITTLE FALLS, NJ--- Again tonight the Tornadoes squandered three separate leads and took the loss in a slugfest from Yogi Berra Stadium, 14-8.

Both starters tonight looked as if they had gotten up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Sean Thompson began the night for New Jersey by allowing a two run laser to left field off the bat of Chris Colabello in the first. The Jackal offense picked up its starter by matching those two in the bottom half against Baron Short. Thompson lasted just two and two thirds while Short went five. They gave up twelve runs and six walks between them. The game was like a heavyweight fight from then on as both clubs continued to exchange blows in the form of multi-run innings; there were seven of them combined. The Jackals provided the knockout punch in the seventh.

Courtesy of a Carlos Sosa long ball and an Alex Pena triple, Worcester took an 8-7 advantage into the seventh. Three pitchers, six hits, seven runs, and two errors later the other shoe had dropped and the Jackals took their first lead of the ballgame in dramatic fashion 14-8. Catcher Matt Lauderdale was 2-2 in the inning with two RBIs and second baseman Marcus Sanders RBI double with the bases loaded did most of the damage.

Manager Gedman, with his bullpen drained already from the night before, was forced to use backup catcher Peter Gilardo for an inning. Ironically, Gilardo produced the second shortest night of the inning facing just four batters.

The Jackal offensive output overshadowed a four RBI night for Chris Colabello (who left the game during an at-bat in the seventh) and a three hit night for Jeff LaHair. Seven Jackal starters had multi-hit games in the largest offensive output runs wise for NJ this season.

The Tornadoes will attempt to mimic their last trip to NJ by winning game three with another veteran left hander, this time Zack Zuercher (7-5). The Jackals will counter with a southpaw of their own in Isaac Pavlik (6-6) at 7:05pm. The Tornadoes return home Friday to take on the Brockton Rox in the last home series of the year.
