
Sergent Gives Snakes Game One Victory

The Calgary Vipers used a terrific pitching performance to defeat the Edmonton Cracker-Cats 8-4 in Game One of the Golden Baseball League's North Division Finals at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. Joe Sergent started and was fantastic going seven and two third innings and giving up only one run on six hits. Sergent (1-0) picked up the win with seven strikeouts and just two walks. As a team the Vipers also collected 16 hits and had three run innings in both the eighth and ninth frames. With the win the Vipers take the 1-0 series lead over the Cracker-Cats.
Felix Jose started off the top of the fourth inning with a walk and was followed by Drew Miller who drilled a two run homerun to give Calgary the 2-0 advantage.
Edmonton cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth frame when Jose Valdez singled, and with two outs Jon Pasieka doubled and Marcus Nettles brought Valdez home with a run batted in base hit for the 2-1 score.
Calgary added to the lead in the top of the eighth inning with a Jorge Mejia double and a Carlos Duncan RBI single. Miller later walked and both Kit Pellow and Richard Austin picked up RBI base hits for the 5-1 advantage.
More insurance runs were added in the top of the ninth inning as with two outs Duncan and Jose walked, Jorge Tang singled home one, Pellow reached with a base knock, and Austin scored two more tallies with a base hit for the 8-1 advantage.
The Cracker-Cats made the game interesting in the bottom of the ninth as Jonathan Castro reached on an error, Pasieka and Nettles singled to load the bases, Carlos Arroyo and Jose Morban both walked for RBI, and Joe Jiannetti plated a third run with a single for the 8-4 score. With the bases loaded Mac Suzuki was able to strike out back-to-back batters to finish off the game.
Duncan went three-for-four at the plate with two runs scored, one RBI, and one walk. Pellow and Austin also collected three hits each with Austin also driving in three runs.
Eric Van Slyke (0-1) picked up the loss in giving up four runs in seven and a third innings.
Game 2 of the playoffs is Wednesday September 3rd at 7:05 PM (MDT) in Edmonton.
Friday September 5th at 7:05 PM (MDT) the Vipers will host Game 3 of the Golden Baseball League's North Division Finals. Games 4 & 5 will also be played at Foothills Stadium on Saturday September 6th at 5:05 PM (MDT) and Sunday September 7th at 1:35 PM (MDT) if necessary.
