Senators win over Wolf Pack

Binghamton, NY - Martin St. Pierre scored a hat trick, and added an assist, to lead the Binghamton Senators to a 5-3 victory over the Hartford Wolf Pack Saturday night at the Broome County Arena, in the 2009-10 regular-season opener for both teams.

Down 4-0 late in the second period, the Wolf Pack battled back as far as 4-3, but could get no closer than that.

Ryan Keller had a goal and an assist for the Senators. Corey Locke scored a pair of goals for Hartford, and Bobby Sanguinetti contributed two assists.

St. Pierre scored twice in a span of 3:01 in the first period to give the Senators the early lead.

At 6:17, Keller knocked down a clearing attempt by the Wolf Pack's Paul Crowder along the right-wing boards and fed it to an unguarded St. Pierre in front of the net. St. Pierre beat Wolf Pack goaltender Matt Zaba for a 1-0 lead. St. Pierre then victimized Patrick Rissmiller at 9:18, stealing the puck from Rissmiller in the slot in the Hartford zone, and put a shot past Zaba on the glove side.

Keller made made it a 3-0 Binghamton advantage at 9:13 of the second period, converting a pass from St. Pierre after the Wolf Pack had missed on two high-quality chances at the other end. Senator tough-guy Jeremy Yablonski then upped the lead to 4-0 at 12;12, when his backhanded attempted centering pass from the left-wing side found its way past Zaba.

The Wolf Pack came to life at 15:17 on a power play, when Locke tipped Sanguinetti's left-point shot between the pads of Senator netminder Mike Brodeur. That started a run of three Hartford goals in a span of 5:05.

Crowder cut it to 4-2 with 1.3 seconds showing on the clock, scoring his first pro goal. Crowder deflected a low shot from the right point by Michael Sauer into the net.

Then, on the first shift of the third period, Locke got his second of the game, when he got his stick on a shot from the slot by P.A. Parenteau, causing the puck to elude Brodeur.

Penalties derailed the Wolf Pack, though, later in the period, as Dane Byers took a tripping minor at 8:22 and Corey Potter was called for interference 40 seconds later. That gave the Senators 1:20 of two-man advantage and again it was St. Pierre who cashed in.

At 10:04, Derek Smith was able to prevent a Wolf Pack clearing attempt at the left point and throw the puck to St. Pierre, who was all alone at the right side of the crease for his hat trick goal.

Hartford had a five-on-three of 1:34 later in the third but was unable to capitalize.

Brodeur made 25 saves to get the win for Binghamton. Zaba stopped 29 shots in the Hartford net.

The Wolf Pack's next action is a visit to Providence on Friday night (7:05), and then they play their home opener Saturday night at the XL Center vs. Springfield, starting at 7:00.
