Syracuse Crunch News Release

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators erased an early deficit to defeat the Syracuse Crunch, 4-2, Sunday afternoon at Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena. The setback leaves the Crunch (33-17-8-0) with four regulation losses in their last five games, but still first place in the Northeast Division.

Syracuse fired 40 shots at Binghamton netminder Peter Mannino including 20 in the third period, the most in a period for a Syracuse road game this season. Only during a 6-on-4 attack with Mannino mishandling a puck behind his net could the Crunch carve into the Senators' lead. Tanner Richard collected his 10th of the season, unassisted, at 18:05 of the third.

The Crunch's first goal of the day also was scored on the power play. Yanni Gourde scored at 8:18 of the first, cutting down the middle and finishing a left-corner pass from Carter Ashton. Cody Kunyk notched his 10th assist on Gourde's team-leading 22nd goal. Ashton's sixth assist and seventh point in 12 games with Syracuse give him 15 points in 24 AHL games this season.

Binghamton scored the next four goals. Chris Wideman, the top-scoring defenseman in the AHL, scored the only even strength goal of the contest at 13:02 of the first. After a Max McCormick faceoff win, Buddy Robinson's bid was stopped by Kristers Gudlevskis, who made 32 saves on 34 Binghamton blasts. Wideman converted from the right point for his 15th of the year.

The Senators took the lead with a power-play goal at 15:50 of the second, their third chance of the period. Gudlevskis again denied an initial offering, knocking the puck over the goal, but it came to captain Aaron Johnson for the score, his fourth. Carter Camper and Shane Prince earned assists.

Brad Mills took consecutive minors midway through the third, but rather than Syracuse's power play tying the game, it allowed its 11th shorthanded goal of the season. Cole Schneider finished off the play after a Derek Grant shorthanded rush. Patrick Mullen had the second assist on the Senators' 10th shorthanded goal of the year, tying them with Utica for the AHL lead.

Derek Grant deposited a power-play goal four minutes later, running Binghamton's lead to 4-1. Partrick Mullen notched his second assist of the game and Ryan Dzingel registered his first.

With less than six minutes left in regulation, an Aaron Johnson match penalty for a check to the head of J.P. Cote in the midst of a Crunch 3-on-2 ultimately led to an extended Crunch power play. Only Richard managed to score, and Syracuse's comeback effort fell. The Senators won for the third time in seven meetings with Syracuse.

The Crunch play three games next week, starting with Adirondack Friday at home, then visiting Albany Saturday and Bridgeport Sunday.
