Portland Pirates News Release
Hershey, Pa. - The Portland Pirates (33-22-3-1) capped off a successful road weekend on Sunday evening with a dominant 5-1 win over the Eastern Conference-leading Hershey Bears (36-16-5-2). It was the Pirates third win in as many games over the weekend.
The first period provided its fair share of excitement with three goals. Hershey started took the first one when Stanislav Galiev scored at 3:02, assisted by Andre Burakovsky and Chris Conner, on a power play. The Pirates evened the score ten minutes later at 13:07 on a goal from Dylan Reese, assisted by Greg Miller and Tyler Gaudet. The Pirates later took the 2-1 lead at 15:21 with a power play goal from Joel Hanley, assisted by Jordan Martinook and Henrik Samuelsson.
Portland started the second frame with a man advantage, but were unsuccessful in converting. Not long after the Bears returned to even strength, Chris Brown went to the box for holding the stick and the Pirates were on yet another power play. It was the second unsuccessful power play of the period. The Pirates received two more power play chances on a Chris Brown holding penalty and a Connor Carrick delay of game penalty that lead into the third period. The Bears also drew power play opportunity that they weren ' t able to capitalize on from a Patrick McNeill cross-checking penalty in the 11th minute.
The Pirates hit the ice with a hunger to win in the third and stopped the high caliber Bears offense while tacking on their final three goals. The first came at 4:02 from Justin Hodgman, assisted by Martinook and Henrik Samuelsson to extend the lead to 3-1. Philip Samuelsson netted a power play goal at 7:09, assisted by Hodgman and Jordan Szwarz. The Pirates ' final goal of the night came at 16:35 when Martinook scored, assisted by Alex Bolduc at 16:35.
Portland Goaltender David Leggio (8-13-0) blocked 23 of the 24 shots he faced, handing the Bears a loss, just the sixth they ' ve had on home ice this season. Bears net minder Jeff Zatkoff (23-12-4) blocked 30 of 35 shots from the Pirates.
The Pirates will return home for a four-game home stand at the Cross Insurance Arena where they will take on the Norfolk Admirals Friday the 13th at 7:00 PM. They will play the admirals again on Saturday night at 7:00 PM. The Bears come to town for a rematch on Friday, March 20 and Saturday, March 21.
