
Second Half Surge Leads To Hammerheads Win Over Roughnecks, 47-35

MIDLAND, TX.: The West Texas Roughnecks began a three-game road stretch on Sunday, March 21 against the Corpus Christi Hammerheads from the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, TX. Following a productive first half in which the Roughnecks led 27-20, the Hammerheads outscored the Roughnecks 27-8 in the second half to win the game 47-35. The Roughnecks dropped to 1-2 on the season with the loss while the Hammerheads improved to 2-1.
The Hammerheads scored the first points of the game as QB Wes Cooper found WR Brandon Hussey for a 15-yard touchdown pass to make it 6-0. The Roughnecks countered with an impressive opening drive as Jorvorskie Lane posted a four-yard touchdown run to give the Roughnecks a 7-6 lead.
Justin Hardman would give the lead back to the Hammerheads as he returned a Zeke Arevalo kickoff back 50 yards for a score. Roughnecks FB DeWayne Hogan would return the lead to the Roughnecks with an eight-yard touchdown run to make it 14-12. Corpus would get the lead back after Wes Cooper found Terrance Pearson for a 29-yard touchdown pass. But the Roughnecks swung the momentum back in their favor when QB Tommy Jones hooked up with WR Ryan Bugg for a 23-yard touchdown pass in which Bugg leaped over a dasher board to make the catch. The Roughnecks defense stopped the Hammerheads on fourth down to get the ball back to their offense leading to a 16-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Steve Bergeski. The Roughnecks led at halftime, 27-20.
Everything swung into the Hammerheads favor in the second half as the Roughnecks were stopped three times on fourth down situations and posted one interception. The Hammerheads outscored the Roughnecks 15-0 in the third quarter as QB Wes Copper completed two touchdown passes to Brandon Hussey to give the Hammerheads a 35-27 lead.
The Roughnecks hung tough as they tied the game in the early portions of the fourth quarter when DeWayne Hogan ran in a four-yard touchdown run. Tommy Jones found WR Josh Floyd for the two-point conversion which tied the game at 35.
The Roughnecks defense had difficulty slowing down the Hammerheads as Wes Cooper found Toric Goins for a 39-yard touchdown pass to make it 41-35 later the fourth quarter. After the Roughnecks could not convert a fourth down situation, the Hammerheads cappd off the win with a Justin Hardman two-yard touchdown run to make it 47-35.
