MILWAUKEE (Dec. 14, 2007) - Giuliano Oliviero and Greg Howes each scored a pair of goals as the Milwaukee Wave went on the road Saturday night and knocked off the first-place Chicago Storm 9-6 in a Major Indoor Soccer League game.
The Wave (7-3) returned to within a half-game of the Storm (7-2) and are alone in second.
Milwaukee trailed 2-0 at halftime before Oliviero broke up a 63-minute scoreless drought on an assist from the 19-year-old rookie Deco.
The game's key play took place with 8:50 left in the third quarter. A collision between the Wave's Jonathan Santos and the Storm's Matthew Stewart resulted in a red card and ejection against Stewart, the Storm's No. 4 scorer. On the resulting two-minute power play, Howes struck his first 3-pointer of the year to make it 5-2. Oliviero added one more goal before the end of the quarter and the Wave led 7-2 entering the final period.
The Storm - who had outscored foes 32-6 in the fourth quarter heading into the game - scored a goal with 46 seconds remaining to get within 9-6, but couldn't forge the tying goal with the help of a sixth attacker.
Goalkeeper Nick Vorberg limited an opponent to less than 10 points for the third game in a row and improved to 6-3. Chicago's Jeff Richey had a 15-game regular-season winning streak halted.
The Wave return home on Dec. 31 for their traditional New Year's Eve contest at 1 p.m. against Chicago. It's a Family Four-Pack Night, and fans can get four tickets, four sodas and four hot dogs for just $60. The package must be ordered in advance by calling the Wave office at (414) 224-9283.
