San Angelo Colts News Release
Second baseman Eric Gonzalez recorded the final four outs of the game in an emergency relief appearance to pitch the White Wings to a 4-3 win over the Colts on Wednesday night at Foster Field.
The White Wings scored single runs in the first three innings to jump out to a 3-1 lead. Catcher Luany Sanchez drove in the first run of the game on a RBI single. Third baseman Welsinson Baez smacked a solo homerun (2) to give Rio Grande Valley their second run, which was followed by a RBI double by Sanchez in the third.
Mixed in was an RBI single by third baseman Landon Camp for the Colts in the second to give San Angelo their first run of the game. The White Wings would respond however with an insurance run on an RBI double by designated hitter Kevin Griffin in the seventh to give Rio Grande Valley a commanding 4-1 lead.
The Colts would make things interesting in a bizarre eighth inning that saw San Angelo score two runs and Rio Grande Valley use four different pitchers. The inning started with reliever Jason Moody recording an out and giving up an RBI double to second baseman Mark Ramos to make the score 4-2.
With one out and a runner at second, Moody was lifted for closer Anderson Garcia who got a grounout for out number two, as Ramos moved to third. On the first pitch to designated hitter Jason Crosland, the ball got away from the catcher Sanchez, which allowed Ramos to score and cut the lead to one. On the play, Garcia injured himself while covering home and had to leave the game.
That brought in pitcher number three, backup second baseman Roberto Rodriguez, who promptly hit Crosland and allowed a single to first baseman Josh Collazo, which put runners at first and second with two out.
That forced White Wings manager Eddie Dennis to bring in the starting second baseman Gonzalez, who got Camp to ground out to end the threat. Gonzalez then retired the Colts in the ninth to pick up his first career save.
Rio Grande Valley was led offensively by Griffin who went 3-5 with two doubles, a single and an RBI while Sanchez went 2-5 with a single, double and two RBI. Baez also had a good game going 3-4 with a homer, RBI and two singles.
San Angelo's offensive leader was Ramos who went 2-3 with a double, single, run and RBI.
Lost in the chaos was two tremendous pitching performances by the starters. White Wing hurler Misael DeJesus (2-3) pitched himself to his second straight win over the Colts by allowing an unearned run on three hits, while striking out seven in seven innings of work. Chandler Barnard (2-2) took the loss for San Angelo despite going eight innings and allowing four earned runs on 10 hits and striking out six.
The teams will be back in action on Thursday beginning at 7:05 as southpaw Aaron Cunningham (2-2, 5.55 ERA) will go for San Angelo against Luis Montano (3-3, 9.80 ERA) of Rio Grande Valley. The game can be heard on 1260 KKSA with the Kemps Pregame Show getting things started at 6:50.
Thursday will also be the Pink Bat Auction presented by Cisco Equipment. In support of the fight against breast cancer, Colts players will use pink bats during that evening's game. Afterwards, all of the bats will be auctioned off on the field with the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.
