San Angelo Colts News Release

Colts starter Aaron Cunningham went six innings and allowed only two runs on six hits as the Colts picked up a much-needed 6-3 win over the Rio Grande Valley White Wings on Thursday night at Foster Field.

The win was the Colts' first of the four-game set after dropping the previous two games against the White Wings.

The win also ended a skid that saw San Angelo lose six of their previous eight games.

The White Wings jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI singles by catcher Luany Sanchez and second baseman Eric Gonzalez.

However, San Angelo came right back in the bottom of the first by plating three runs on a three-run homer by designated hitter Jason Crosland, his league-leading 13th of the season, to give the Colts a 3-2 lead.

San Angelo added an insurance run in the fourth on an RBI double by rightfielder David Cardona to make it a 4-2 game.

The lead would increase to four in the sixth on a two-run blast by first-baseman Josh Collazo (6), the Colts second homer of the game off of White Wings starter Luis Montano.

Rio Grande Valley tried to make a comeback as designated hitter Kevin Griffin singled in a run in the seventh to cut the San Angelo lead to 6-3.

They would then load the bases with two out in the eighth before reliever Chace Vacek induced a groundout by first baseman Joel Roa to end the inning.

Closer Mike Hacker then came on and pitched a perfect ninth inning to garner his ninth save of the season.

Crosland led the Colts offensively, going 3-4 with a homer, three RBI and three runs scored.

Collazo chipped in by going 2-4 with a homer and two RBI.

Rio Grande Valley's hitting attack was led by Griffin who went 2-5 with a double, RBI and run scored while Sanchez went 2-3 with an RBI to aid the White Wing cause.

Cunningham's performance upped his record to 3-2 as he allowed no walks and struck out five.

The loss befell Montano who went the distance for the White Wings, allowing six runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts in eight innings of work.

The teams will close out their four-game series on Friday beginning at 7:05 as Brian Henschel (3-4, 5.84 ERA) will go for San Angelo against Andres Rosales (3-2, 4.89 ERA) of Rio Grande Valley.

The game can be heard on 1260 KKSA with the Kemps Pregame Show getting things started at 6:50.

Friday will also be Cap Night courtesy of Shannon Medical Center as the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a free San Angelo Colts baseball cap. Furthermore, a large crowd is expected as Friday will also be Tom Green County Night. All fans and businesses of Tom Green County are invited to purchase general admission tickets at 1/2 price for only $3 while tickets last.
