
Second Annual First XI Luncheon Raises $22,000 for United for D.C.

CHANTILLY, VA (March 30, 2004) - United for D.C., the charitable arm of D.C. United, announced today that it raised more than $22,000 at the Second Annual First XI Charity Luncheon. Held at Top of the Town in Arlington, VA, the second-year event was presented as part of the run-up to D.C. United's 2004 MLS debut.
"We are pleased with the turnout and support we received this year from the team and our community," said Catherine Marquette, Executive Director of United For D.C. and D.C. United's Director of Community & Fan Relations. "We are happy to have surpassed our goal of $20,000, and we look forward to working with all of the organizations in attendance throughout the upcoming year."
In addition to keynote addresses from United CEO Kevin Payne and Head Coach Peter Nowak, United for D.C. auctioned items donated by MLS teams and other community-minded organizations. Fetching the highest price in the auction was a soccer ball autographed by England and Real Madrid star David Beckham, sold for $350.00 to Kevin Payne.
United for D.C. also announced a relaunch of unitedfordc.org, the organization's website. Hosted by Active Designs of Alexandria, VA, the site was recently redesigned to provide a more streamlined experience. Located at www.unitedfordc.org, the web presence allows United for D.C. to promote its community-based programming and charitable fundraising efforts, as well as recognize key donors and benefactors to the organization.
"We are excited to be able to support the great work United for D.C. does in the Washington, D.C. area and to participate in their events," said Robert Gillespie, Managing Partner/CEO of Active Designs. "The newest version of unitedfordc.org will allow United for D.C. to more easily disseminate information about its programs through better content management, and to help market and manage events like today's fantastic First XI Luncheon."
United for D.C., Inc. was founded on January 8th, 2002 as the charitable arm of Major League Soccer's D.C. United. United For D.C. is a 501(c)3 organization chartered to serve the Washington, D.C. community through the creation or support of programs, events and organizations that advance educational and social welfare opportunities (primarily health and recreational) for the area's youth, particularly those who may be economically, physically or mentally disadvantaged.
