DAVENPOT, IA - Carlos Correa homered, tripled and drove in three to lead the Quad Cities River Bandits past the Beloit Snappers by a score of 9-5 in the decisive game of the Western Division Championship series in the Midwest League playoffs on Monday night at Pohlman Field with 240 on hand.
The Snappers season comes to an end with the loss while the River Bandits move on to the Midwest League Championship Series.
After a scoreless first, Rio Ruiz got Quad Cities on the board by slamming a two-run homer over the wall in center against Derek DeYoung (1-0). When Teoscar Hernandez and Carlos Correa opened the next frame with back-to-back jacks, the lead went to 4-0. Danry Vasquez then drew a walk, moved to second on a single, to third on fielder's choice and stole home as part of a double steal.
Beloit got on the board in the bottom of the third on a solo homer by Sam Roberts, but the River Bandits immediately responded as Brian Blasik began the fourth with a double and later came across on a groundout. Another run came home in the fifth thanks to a run scoring double by Jordan Scott.
Nick Rickles brought the Snappers to within 7-2 in the bottom half of the fifth with an RBI double, but Quad Cities starter Daniel Minor would allow no more. In six frames he only allowed six hits along with two runs and struck out six. He also didn't walk a batter.
In the top of the sixth, the onslaught from the River Bandits offense continued, as Correa lined a triple into right for an RBI and scored one batter later, when Danry Vasquez singled.
As has happened all year the Snappers didn't go down without a fight. Three singles loaded the bases and a walk and a sacrifice fly each brought in runs. With two outs, Brett Vertigan singled to center to score another run, bringing Beloit to within four. They couldn't get any closer, however. In the ninth, Aaron Shipman did get on with a one out double but Mitchell Lambson got Ryan Mathews to ground out and Christopher Bostick to foul out, bringing an end to the Snappers season.
