Ozzie's Reading Club Open to Schools for 2013-14 Year

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars have announced a series of "Ozzie's Scholars" scholarships to be awarded to both current and former members of Ozzie's Reading Club, the organization's reading incentive program for Chicagoland youth that is now open to schools for the 201 3 -1 4 academic year.

Since the program's inception 1 9 years ago, more than 2 million Chicagoland youth have participated in Ozzie's Reading Club. Schools which have participated over the years include every area of Chicagoland and stretch as far south as Bradley, north as Hebron, southwest as LaSalle, and east as Berwyn. In 201 3, Ozzie's Reading Club involved 400 Chicagoland schools and nearly 135,000 youth who furthered their love for reading.

Scholarship applicants are encouraged to submit an essay, no longer than 400 words, that focuses on the benefits of reading and its positive influence in their daily lives, such as schoolwork, hobbies and summer jobs. As many as 10 total recipients will receive up to a $1,000 scholarship from the Cougars organization, in each of the following categories:

- Current kindergarteners through 2nd grade students

- Current 3rd grade students through 5th grade students

- Current 6th grade students through 8th grade students

- Current high school students

- Current college students

About Ozzie's Reading Club : Ozzie's Reading Club tracks the progress of a student's reading around the bases of a baseball diamond with the three bases and home plate representing two weeks' worth of reading. Each teacher may determine his or her own reading requirements for each base. Students completing the program's requirements "hit a home run" and earn a free ticket to an April or May Cougars game designated by their school. Other rewards may include a bookmark, a voucher for a hot dog and soda as well as an official Ozzie's Reading Club bag.
