Season Ends in Cold Sweep

On a long, cold and soggy night, Orem completed the four game sweep of the Ogden Raptors Thursday night in the tenth inning, 14-12. The Owlz battled the rain and temperatures in the high forties to stay red hot taking a four game winning streak into the playoffs as they prepare for a best of three series with the Raptors beginning Friday night.
Orem jumped out the early lead thanks to a three-run jack by left fielder Ricky Alvarez. Alvarez and Brandon Decker started for the first time this season in left and right field respectively.
Heading into the bottom of the third, the Owlz led 5-2. Ogden would respond putting up a four spot off a sac fly, an RBI single and a 2-run homerun by Blake Dean taking the lead 6-5.
Starting third baseman Kaleb Cowart, the Angels first round pick in the 2010 draft, made the most of his Pioneer League debut going 2-for-5 with three runs batted in and a homerun.
After each team put up a couple more runs, Ogden tied the game in the bottom of the ninth off of a sac fly by Pedro Guerrero 12-12. The Owlz would respond quickly.
In the top of the tenth, the Raptors retired the first two batters quickly with a strikeout by Cowart, and a ground out by Michael Sodders. But with two outs and runners on second and first, Ryan Broussard hit a double to deep right center scoring Oldfield and Eicherlberger. The Owlz took the lead 14-12.
Reliever Eric Cendejas got into some trouble in the bottom of the tenth. After a quick pop out, a walk, a single and another walk loaded the bases with only one out. Cendejas settled down striking out Casio Grider and inducing a pop out by Leon Landry to end the game.
Both teams racked up a combined 36 hits, 13 extra base hits, and 26 runs going a combined 14-for-43 with runners in scoring position and stranding 26 on base in a game that lasted just over three and a half hours.
The Owlz will look to extend the winning streak on Friday night as they send Heath Nichols to the mound for the first game of the divisional playoff series against the Raptors. Tickets start at just $1 with 20 oz. Pepsi products only a buck as well. First Pitch will be at 7:05.
