Victoria Seals News Release

Victoria, BC - Welcoming the Edmonton Capitals to Royal Athletic Park for the first time, the Victoria Seals played host to game one of a three game series on Friday night. With the visitors sending Justin Jordan (1-1) to the mound, the Seals responded with Eduardo Baeza (1-4) in the series opener.

Following a scoreless first inning, despite four base runners between the two teams, Edmonton opened the scoring in the top of the second. A lead-off home run from Jorge Cortes was duplicated four pitches later when Chad Ernsberger made it a 2-0 game with a home run of his own.

Victoria would strike back in the second inning, though, using five singles to score both Bret LeVier and Trevor Davidson and tie the game through two frames. The Seals would then take the lead in the third when, with the bases loaded and two out, a routine ground ball to third basemen Chad Ernsberger was lost in the sun by Aaron Hornostaj, allowing all three runners to score for a 5-2 Victoria lead.

The home side would stretch their advantage to four in the seventh on the back of a solo home run from Brett Flowers, his first of the season, taking a 6-2 lead to the sixth inning. In that frame, the Capitals began to chip away at the Seals' lead when back-to-back doubles from Joey Gomes and Cortes both scored to cut the deficit to two. But Victoria would get one back for a 7-4 advantage when Davidson scored on a sacrifice fly from Wilver Perez after reaching with a double. Gomes would factor into the scoring again in the eighth frame, though, launching a home run off the scoreboard in left to bring the Capitals back within a pair.

With Ethan Katz looking for the save in the top of the ninth inning, Edmonton would rally to force extra innings with a double from Darryl Brinkley to score pinch-hitter Kevin House and Marcus Nettles who had reached on a single and a walk, respectively.

Headed to the eleventh inning still deadlocked at 7-7, a single from Max Poulin followed by walks to both Brinkley and Gomes gave the Capitals the opportunity they were looking for. Jorge Cortes hit a two-out offering from Graham Campbell just out of the reach of a sprawling Jamar Hill to clear the bases and put Edmonton out front 10-7. With Jason Pearson on to retire the Victoria batters in order, the Capitals snatched game one of the series at Royal Athletic Park.

Edmonton reliever Derrick DePriest gets credit for his first win on the year, while Graham Campbell falls to 0-1 with the loss. Jorge Cortes finished 3-for-6 with four RBI's in the win, while Joey Gomes was also 2-for-5 with three runs scored for the Capitals.
