The Saint John Sea Dogs (28-15-1-3) kicked off their weekend with a big win over the third place Charlottetown Islanders (30-9-4-0). Goals from Ryan Francis and Josh Lawrence led the Sea Dogs in their win in Charlottetown on Friday night.
Nikolas Hurtubise started in net for Saint John and made 22 saves on 23 shots. Francesco Lapenna also faced 23 shots in the Islanders net, making 21 saves in the 2-1 Sea Dogs win.
A slashing penalty to Patrick Guay one minute into play, sending the Sea Dogs to an early power play. Wasting no time, Ryan Francis opened the scoring at 2:04 giving the Sea Dogs a 1-0 lead.
The rest of the period was scoreless as the Sea Dogs successfully killed two penalties and took the lead into the second frame.
Shots after the first were 9-6 for Saint John.
The second period was scoreless on both sides of the ice, but the special teams got lots of ice time as the teams were awarded seven penalties between them.
Shots after the second were 16-15 for Saint John.
The Sea Dogs opened the third period with another early goal, 1:25 into play. Josh Lawrence hit the back of the net, picking up his own rebound and making it 2-0.
Midway through the period, the Islanders scored their first of the night from Brett Budgell, making it a one goal game.
A flurry of saves from Hurtubise kept the Sea Dogs lead late in the third.
The Islanders pulled their netminder with 1:30 remaining in regulation, but were unable to score with the extra man and the Sea Dogs came out on top 2-1.
Final Shots were tied at 23.

The Sea Dogs continue their weekend play in Moncton tomorrow, Saturday the 12th at 7. They will return to TD Station next week on Friday March 18, hosting the Islanders at 7 PM. This will be the grand re-opening of the Moosehead Light Ice Bar! Tickets are available at the TD Station Box Office and online, bring some friends and enjoy the action from on the glass.
