Sea Dogs win 10-1

June 2, 2006 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release

After a rain delay of almost three hours, the Connecticut Defenders and Portland Sea Dogs began what would be a rain shortened five-inning game between the top two teams in the Eastern League's North Division at Dodd Stadium won by the Sea Dogs 10-1.

The Sea Dogs got to the Defenders starter Garrett Broshuis early and often. The first three batters of the game reached base on a lead off single by Tyler Minges and back to abck four pitch walks to Chris Durbin and Chad Spann. After an infield fly, a bases loaded walk to Brandon Moss scored the first run followed by a two run single by Luis Jimenez.

The Defenders got on the board in the bottom half of the inning but for the second day in a row really didn't get as much as they could or probably should have. After Clay Timpner reached on an error and Derin McMains singled, Nate Schierholtz struck out for the first out of the inning. Tyler Von Schell followed with a walk to load the bases, and then Portland starter Kason Gabbard walked in Clay Timpner to make the score 3-1. The Defenders still had the bases loaded with one away, but an infield fgly by Brian Buscher and a Randy Walter fly out ended the threat with a run, but yet another squandered opportunity.

Broshuis allowed three more runs to score in the second inning on a three run bomb by Brandon Moss, his fourth of the year. Broshuis would allow two more runs in the third before giving way to Mike Musgrave after just 2.1 innings of work. Chris Durbin added a two run home run in the 5th, his first of the year to make the score 10-1. As soon as the Defenders were retired in the bottom of the 5th to make the game official, the tarp was put over the field and the game was shortly called after.

The Defenders and Sea Dogs will go head-to-head in a double header tomorrow at Dodd Stadium with game one scheduled for 6:05. Pat Misch (5-1), the left-hander will take the ball for Connecticut in game one against righty Chris Smith (5-3). Lefty Geno Espinelli (3-1) will make the spot start for the Defenders in game two against Portland right-hander Devern Hansack (2-2). Both games are scheduled for to go seven innings.
