Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN, NB --- The Saint John Sea Dogs continued their winning ways on Sunday afternoon, wrapping up their November schedule by defeating the Halifax Mooseheads by a score of 7-1 at Harbour Station to finish the month with a record of 6-0-0-1 and improve to 21-3-0-2 overall.
Zack Phillips (2), Nathan Beaulieu, Tomas Jurco, Jonathan Huberdeau, Scott Oke, and Stanislav Galiev all scored for the Sea Dogs in their lopsided home win, while Francis Turbide tallied the lone marker of the match for the Mooseheads. Between the pipes, Frédéric Piché (33 saves) picked up his tenth victory of the season for Saint John while Mathieu Corbeil fell to 6-10 after surrendering seven goals on 36 shots faced for Halifax.
The home team dominated Sunday's special teams battle, going 3-for-6 on the power play while successfully killing off all five penalties bestowed upon them by officials. Click HERE to view a complete scoresheet from Sunday's highly-impressive home victory.
Saint John struck early on Sunday, as the red hot stick of second-year sniper Zack Phillips produced the game's first goal shortly after Jonathan Huberdeau forced a turnover in the visitors' zone and promptly fed his net-charging linemate the puck just 34 seconds into the action. Phillips struck again 13:57 later, knocking home a loose puck during a Sea Dogs power play to both improve his 2010-11 goals total to 19 and give his team a 2-0 lead.
The hosts went up by three 4:42 into period number two, with veteran defenseman Nathan Beaulieu hammering a long-distance one-timer past Corbeil to make the fifth marker of his season of the man-up variety. Saint John's fourth goal of the day came courtesy of import winger Tomas Jurco, who registered his 14th of the year in the 38th minute of play by burying a cross-ice feed from Jonathan Huberdeau on the fly in Halifax territory.
After Francis Turbide scored to reduce the visitors' deficit to three early in the third period, 17-year-old offensive dynamo Jonathan Huberdeau produced the fifth Sea Dogs goal of the afternoon, taking a pass from Kevin Gagné at the side of Halifax's net and proceeding to deke his way to pay dirt in picking up the 16th goal of his sophomore campaign. Washington Capitals prospect Stanislav Galiev then got in on the action, blasting a slap shot past Corbeil midway through regulation's final frame to make the score 6-1 in Saint John's favour.
The Sea Dogs went up by an unconverted touchdown two-and-a-half minutes later, with rookie forward Scott Oke depositing his fourth goal of the year across the Mooseheads' goal line. Oke's even-strength marker proved to be the final offensive strike of the afternoon as Saint John ultimately took the decision by a six-goal margin.
Up next for the Sea Dogs is a Wednesday night road game versus the Titan (puck drop - 7:30pm). Saint John's next home game is scheduled to take place on Friday, December 3 at 7:30pm versus the upstart Lewiston MAINEiacs.
