Sea Dogs Sweep Rock Cats to Win 3-1
April 14, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Portland Sea Dogs News Release
(New Britain, CT) Pitching was the story for most of the game on Thursday morning in New Britain, but in the end, a solo home run by Yamaico Navarro made the difference, as the Portland Sea Dogs completed a three-game sweep of the Rock Cats with a 3-1 win at New Britain Stadium.
Ryne Miller got the start for Portland, while New Britain turned to Carlos Gutierrez. The two starters matched each other pitch-for-pitch in the first three innings, as the contest remained scoreless.
In the top of the fourth, the Sea Dogs struck first. Lars Anderson and Juan Apodaca picked up consecutive singles, and two batters later, Jason Place singled home Anderson with the first run of the morning.
That was the only blemish on Gutierrez' card, as he allowed five hits and two walks, while striking out three, in five innings of work. Ryne Miller threw five scoreless innings for Portland, allowing just three hits and one walk, while striking out one batter.
Robert Coello took over on the hill in the bottom of the sixth, and was immediately greeted by back-to-back singles by Estarlin De Los Santos and Rene Tosoni. After inducing a pop-up to Whit Robbins, Coello allowed an RBI single to Chris Parmalee, tying the game at one.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Sea Dogs broke the tie. Yamaico Navarro started the frame with a solo homer to center field on a 1-1 pitch by Cole DeVries, and the visitors would ultimately add one more run on a throwing error by Toby Gardenhire.
Despite allowing the tying run, Robert Coello (1-1) came back to earn the win, as he pitched three innings out of the Portland bullpen. Cole DeVries (0-2) suffered the loss for New Britain, allowing two runs in two innings. Jason Rice picked up his first Double-A save with a scoreless ninth inning.
On Thursday night, the long wait will finally be over, as the Sea Dogs will play their first home game of 2010. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00, as Portland battles the Trenton Thunder. Kyle Weiland (0-1) gets the start for the Sea Dogs, going up against Trenton's Jeremy Bleich (1-0).
