New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - A sellout crowd of 7,672 turned out this morning at New Britain Stadium to see the Rock Cats do mid-day baseball battle with the visiting Portland Sea Dogs. The throng watched a fine pitchers' duel that carried all the way to the final frame, when Portland SS Yamaico Navarro broke a 1-1 tie by belting a lead-off HR over the centerfield wall. The Sea Dogs went on to score another Run in the inning - this one unearned - before holding the Rock Cats in check in their final at bat to seal the 3-1 victory.

With the win, Portland swept the three-game series in New Britain and sent the Rock Cats to their sixth consecutive defeat.

New Britain starter Carlos Gutierrez pitched five strong innings, surrendering 5 Hits and 1 Run while striking out 5. Southpaw Spencer Steedley relieved him and threw two scoreless frames. Portland starter Ryne Miller also went 5 innings and left with a 1-0 lead. The Rock Cats squared things in the 6th when RF Chris Parmelee (2 for 4) blooped a hit over the head of the Portland second-baseman, scoring Estarlin de los Santos.

RHP Cole DeVries came out of the New Britain bullpen in the 8th and tossed a perfect inning. Then facing his first batter in the 9th, on a 2-2 pitch, he was touched by Navarro's HR. DeVries took the loss and his record fell to 0-2. The winner for Portland was reliever Robert Coello, who pitched 3 innings and evened his early season mark to 1-1.
