Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
ALTOONA, PA - The Altoona Curve swept the first-ever series with the Richmond Flying Squirrels, claiming the finale, 4-2, on Wednesday night at Blair County Ballpark.
For the third consecutive game in the series, Altoona jumped on top first, plating a pair of runs in the second inning off of Squirrels' starter Clayton Tanner. Hector Gimenez supplied the first as he led off the inning with a solo-home run to left field. Game two hero Josh Harrison doubled on the very next pitch to get Altoona started again. Harrison moved to third when Matt Hague grounded out, and Curve manager Matt Walbeck put on the squeeze-play with Jose de los Santos at the plate. He responded with a perfect bunt in front of the plate with Harrison breaking for home. Harrison crossed safely to expand the Curve lead, 2-0.
Richmond got one of the runs back off of Curve starter Jared Hughes in the fourth inning. Conor Gillaspie led off the inning with a drive over the wall in right-center field, his second homer of the season trimming the lead to 2-1.
Matt Hague contributed an RBI double to drive home Harrison in the bottom of the fourth as the Curve reclaimed a two-run advantage, 3-1.
The Flying Squirrels again utilized the long-ball to climb back into the ballgame in the fifth as Brandon Crawford belted his first of the year to right field off of Hughes to cut the lead for Altoona to 3-2.
Tanner (1-1) worked a scoreless inning in the fifth, but departed following the frame to a loss, his first of the season.
Altoona tacked on their final run in the seventh, when a wild pitch from reliever Craig Whitaker allowed Jim Negrych to score for the final margin, 4-2.
Hughes (2-0) worked 5 1/3 innings for his second win of the season. Michael Dubee pitched through the seventh for Altoona, and Jeff Sues worked two scoreless innings to finish the ballgame, earning his second save of the series and the season.
The Flying Squirrels return to Richmond for Opening Night presented by MARTIN'S against the Reading Phillies on Thursday at The Diamond at 7:05 PM. RHP Daryl Maday (0-0, 3.60) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Mike Cisco (1-0, 1.50) for Reading.
