SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs have signed and recalled defenceman Alex Bernier from the Dieppe Commandos of the Maritime Hockey League (MHL).
The 18-year-old from Dieppe is in his first season with the Commandos, where he has seven goals and 21 points in 24 games. He was named the MHL Rookie of the Month in September.
Listed at 5'9", 155 lbs., Bernier spent the past two seasons with the Moncton Flyers of the New Brunswick/PEI Major Midget Hockey League (NBPEIMMHL), and was a teammate of current Sea Dog forward Kyle Ward.
"We've been watching Alex for the last couple of years," said Sea Dogs General Manager Darrell Young. "He has already established himself as one of the best defencemen in the Maritime Hockey League.
"We like his compete level. He played well at the Eastern Canada Cup All-Star Challenge in Cornwall (Ontario) last month. His signing opens more options for us as we look ahead to the trading period."
Bernier is expected to be available when the Sea Dogs take on the Moncton Wildcats tonight at 7 p.m. at Moncton Coliseum. Listen LIVE on 96.1 NewSong FM or newsongfm.ca. Watch LIVE on theqmjhl.ca. Also watch LIVE on Rogers TV Community Cable Channel 10.
