Sea Dogs Push Eagles to Brink of Elimination

March 29, 2011 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

SYDNEY, N.S. - The Saint John Sea Dogs are within one game of advancing to the second round of the President's Cup playoffs thanks to a 5-1 win over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in Game 3 of their best-of-seven opening-round series.

Tomas Jurco had a goal and two assists for the Sea Dogs, while Jonathan Huberdeau and Steven Anthony notched a goal and a helper each. Kevin Gagne and Tomas Jurco chipped in singles, and North Sydney, N.S., native Michael Kirkpatrick racked up three assists. Jacob DeSerres made 21 saves for the win.

Dany Potvin scored for Cape Breton and Andrew Hayes made 28 saves in the loss. Cape Breton now faces the unenviable task of attempting to win four straight against the No. 1 seed in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and the nation's No. 1 ranked team.

Game 4 is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday in Sydney. Tim Roszell will have the call on News 88.9 FM . Fans can also catch all the action online via the official TELUS QMJHL webcast.

The power play was a factor once again, as the Sea Dogs went 2-for-4, to extend their record to 10-for-18 in the first three games. Cape Breton's Spencer Metcalfe, making his playoff debut after sitting out the first two games due to suspension, took a cross-checking penalty 7:10 into the game. Huberdeau made him pay just four seconds into the ensuing man advantage, with assists from Kirkpatrick and Simon Despres. The goal was Huberdeau's fourth of the playoffs.

Potvin got the Eagles on the board at 14:14, but Anthony put Saint John right back on top six seconds later. Anthony rushed to the net to bury a rebound for his second of the playoffs, with assists from Jurco and Kirkpatrick.

Gagne extended the lead to 3-1 at 19:12 of the first, as his point shot found its way through for his first post-season goal. Anthony and Jurco picked up the assists.

Galiev then made it 4-1 at 10:04 of the second period, spinning and firing a high shot from the slot that beat Hayes. Huberdeau and Nathan Beaulieu assisted on the goal, Galiev's fourth of the playoffs.

The Eagles got into more penalty trouble late in the second, setting up a 5-on-3 power play for Saint John to open the third. Jurco finished an easy tap-in 53 seconds into the final frame for his second of the post-season, with helpers from Zack Phillips and Kirkpatrick.

Game 5, if necessary, will be back in Saint John Friday, a 7:30 p.m. start at Harbour Station.
