Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN - With excitement in the air over Saturday's upcoming Night of Champions, the Saint John Sea Dogs are offering an exclusive piece of memorabilia in the team's first-ever online auction.
Up for bid is an authentic goalie stick used by Jacob DeSerres during the team's 2011 run to the Memorial Cup championship, which is being celebrated with a special banner-raising and ring presentation ceremony before Saturday's 7 p.m. game against the Chicoutimi Sagueneens.
Fans anywhere with an Internet connection can place bids on the item at http://auction.chl.ca, through Nov. 14. The starting bid is $77.11, representing Saint John's overall 2010-11 record of 77 wins, 11 losses, which is inscribed on the championship rings the players, coaches, owners and staff will receive at Saturday's Night of Champions.
"Our team gets requests from all over the world for Sea Dogs merchandise and memorabilia," said Sea Dogs President Wayne Long. "We have held auctions on special game nights over the years, but we recognize that not all of our fans are able to come to Saint John for a game. This online auction is a great way for our fans far and wide to own a piece of Sea Dogs history. What better way to launch than with an authentic piece of Memorial Cup memorabilia on the weekend we are celebrating the championships."
DeSerres backstopped the Saint John Sea Dogs to the national major junior hockey championship, making key save after key save. One of the sticks DeSerres used during the championship run was signed by the championship team at the end of last season and will be awarded to the highest bidder in this online auction.
The team also announced that DeSerres, now playing for the University of Calgary Dinos, will be in attendance Saturday as a special guest during the festivities. The Memorial Cup will be at centre ice, the Memorial and President's Cup championship banners will be raised to the rafters, and players, coaches, ownership and staff will receive their commemorative championship rings in a special ceremony.
Ticket sales have climbed steadily throughout the week and fewer than 1,000 tickets remained as of Friday morning. Fans are encouraged to purchase their tickets early to make sure not to miss out on this historic evening.
Canadian Hockey League President David Branch and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Commissioner Gilles Courteau will be among the special guests participating in the ring ceremony. Other confirmed guests include Saint John Mayor Ivan Court, Rothesay Mayor Bill Bishop, Quispamsis Mayor Murray Driscoll, Grand Bay - Westfield Mayor Grace Losier and area MLAs Dorothy Shephard and Glen Tait. Game time is 7 p.m. but fans are encouraged to be in their seats early.
Former Sea Dogs Alexandre Beauregard and Gabriel Bourret, now with Chicoutimi, will take part in the ceremony as well.
The Sea Dogs are also in action Friday, as the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles visit for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop at Harbour Station. Tickets are available at the Harbour Station box office, by calling 506-657-1234 or online at www.tickets.harbourstation.ca.
