The Saint John Sea Dogs (21-15-0-3) fell to the Halifax Mooseheads (22-15-1-1) in their Thursday night meeting in Halifax. The Mooseheads scored three early goals and maintained their lead for the remainder of the game, winning 6-2. Jacob Chantler and Vincent Sevigny were the goal scorers for the Sea Dogs.
Thomas Couture started in net for Saint John, but was replaced by Nikolas Hurtubise after allowing three goals on six shots. Hurtubise faced 19 shots and allowed three goals. Mathis Rousseau started for Halifax, stopping 26 of 28 shots and earning himself third star honours in the win.
The Sea Dogs had a less than ideal start to the game, allowing three goals in the first eight minutes of play to Liam Welsh, Zachary Beauregard, and Zachary L'Heureux. After the third goal at 7:43, Thomas Couture was replaced in net by Nikolas Hurtubise.
Saint John began to get their legs under them and Jacob Chantler scored the first goal of the night for the Port City team at 13:05, picking up a cross-ice pass from William Villeneuve and tapping it in backdoor.
A holding call against the Mooseheads' Evan Boucher at 19:02 sent the Sea Dogs into the second frame on the power play.
Shots at the end of the first were 11-9 for Halifax.
The Sea Dogs did not score on the power play from the end of the first, but were able to begin building momentum early in the period. This momentum was cut by two goals, Zachary L'Heureux's second of the night at 5:05 and Evan Boucher at 7:40.
It then looked as though William Dufour had scored his 31st goal of the season, but after a review the play was declared offside. It did not take long for the Sea Dogs to really score their second of the night, but it was Vincent Sevigny who made it past the netminder at 17:09.
Shots at the end of two were 18-15 Saint John.
A penalty to William Dufour with 30 seconds remaining in the second period had the Sea Dogs shorthanded to begin the final period. They killed the penalty but were unable to overcome the three goal deficit.
Halifax scored a final goal with 32 seconds remaining and won the game 6-2.
Final shots were 28-25 for Saint John.
