Portland, Maine- The Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) honored the Portland Sea Dogs by presenting the Sea Dogs with the 2005 "Education at Work for Maine" award. The award is presented to an organization each year that significantly contributes to the education of Maine students. FAME's CEO John Witherspoon presented the award to Sea Dogs' President and General Manager Charlie Eshbach Tuesday evening at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland.

Each season the Sea Dogs host a variety of education based programs. The "Most Improved Student" program honors more than 7,000 students throughout the state each season for their improvement throughout the school year. The Summer Reading Program encourages children to put the remote control down during the summer and pick-up a book. The "Adopt-a-Sea Dog" program brings players into the classroom and the classroom into the ballpark. Players talk about the importance of education and working hard to accomplish goals. In exchange the students attend a game in which they become actively involved by singing the National Anthem, throwing out the first-pitch, and other activities.

The Sea Dogs have two scholarship programs in which six students are selected for each season. The Sea Dogs internship program has developed countless baseball executives. In addition, the Sea Dogs front office staff can often be found hosting a job shadow student or speaking at a career day.

"It is an honor to be recognized for our efforts outside the playing field," stated Sea Dogs President and General Manager Charlie Eshbach. "It has always been a goal of ours to be a strong active member of the community."

Last year the George Mitchell Institute was the "Education at Work for Maine" award winner.

The Sea Dogs 2006 home opener is scheduled for Thursday, April 13th at 6:00 PM against the Binghamton Mets. Tickets for the 2006 season are currently on sale. To order tickets call the Sea Dogs Ticket Office at 207-879-9500 or log on to www.seadogs.com.
