VICTORIAVILLE- A fast start carried the Victoriaville Tigres to a 6-1 victory over the Screaming Eagles on Saturday night.

Vitalii Abramov got things started for the Tigres before the game was three minutes old. The skilled centreman tried to drop the puck to the front of the net for pinching defenseman Dominic Cormier, but before it could arrive there it bounced off a player in the slot and past Kyle Jessiman.

There were not many shots in the opening period- just 13 combined between the two sides- but after the halfway mark the home team would add to their lead on a pair of goals by Jimmy Huntington. The first of his goals was another instance of the puck bouncing off an unintended recipient and past Jessiman, this time on the power play. For Huntington's second goal he found himself alone in front of the net, and deked around Jessiman to make it a 3-0 game.

Cape Breton would carry most of the second period, outshooting Victoriaville 15-5, but couldn't find their first goal. Instead Victoriaville would pad their lead as after a flurry of action in the Tigres zone, play went the other way and Abramov would score on a breakaway.

The best chance for the Eagles to break the goosegg in the second period came with special teams play. With the Tigres' Maxime Comtois already in the penalty box, defenseman Andrew Smith covered the puck with his hand in the goal crease. Egor Soklov was awarded a penalty shot, but he was denied by Etienne Monpetit and the Tigres were able to kill off the ensuing penalty kill. It was on the man advantage where the breakthrough would come for the Screaming Eagles in the third period, as Ty Fournier put his stick on a rebound to solve Monpetit. The visitors were not able to get any closer however.

Just prior to the midway mark of the third period there would be some fireworks as Cape Breton's Tyler Hylland would take exception to a check from Victoriaville's Mathieu Charlebois. Hylland would be given an extra two minute minor for instigation.

Victoriaville would capitalize on the power play as Maxime Comtois flew up the left wing and zipped the puck through Jessiman. Later in the period Comtois would complete the night's scoring by finishing a pretty passing play to make it a 6-1 score for the Tigres.

Monpetit picked up the win, stopping 28 of 29 shots. Jessiman took the loss allowing six goals on 22 shots. The Screaming Eagles will finish the three in three weekend against the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada on Sunday afternoon. Puck drop is 4 PM Atlantic time, and you can catch all the action starting with the pre-game show with Patrick McNeil at 3:30 on 1270 AM CJCB or online at http://www.cjcbradio.com.
