Moncton N.B. - Neil Smith (5th) scored an empty net goal with less than a minute to go, to give the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles a 7 - 5 victory over the visiting Moncton Wildcats before 2,958 at Center 200 on Friday. The teams were tied 2 - 2 after the first period, with Cape Breton taking a commanding 5 - 3 lead into the third period. Cape Breton received goals from seven different players, including Smith, Vladimir Kubus (3rd), Stephen Dixon (9th), Vincent Lambert (3rd), Kevin Asselin (9th, PP), David Victor (2nd) and Adam Purdy (4th, PP). Adam Pineault led the Wildcats scoring attack with a pair of goals, his 11th and 12th,PP, with singles coming from Jerome Samson (3rd), Stephane Goulet (6th) and Kevin Glode (5th). Steve Bernier added a pair of assists, while Glode, Bruce Graham, Ryan Salvis, Charles Bergeron, J S Adam, Brad Marchand and Wesley Welcher each added one helper. Moncton went 2 for 3 on the powerplay, while Cape Breton went 2 for 6. Cape Breton outshot Moncton 38 - 21, including 14 - 7 in the first, 10 - 4 in the second and 14 - 10 in the third. J.C. Blanchard (3 - 2 - 0) suffered the setback, as he allowed one goal on 13 shots in 30:32 of relief of starter Corey Crawford, who allowed five goals on 24 shots in 29:07. Martin Houle improved his record to 8 - 5 - 2, as he allowed five goals on 21 shots. Moncton (14 - 5 - 1 = 29 pts) remains in first place in the Atlantic Division, five points ahead of the Halifax Mooseheads (9 - 3 - 5 - 1 = 24 pts) and in a tie for first overall with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens (12 - 4 - 3 - 1 = 29 pts). Moncton continues their road trip on Saturday, when they travel to Halifax to face the Mooseheads in a 7 pm contest at the Metro Centre. Moncton's next home game is on Wednesday, November 10th, when they host the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in a 7 pm contest at the Coliseum.
