West Virginia Black Bears News Release
NILES, OH - For the second time this season, the West Virginia Black Bears were swept by the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at Eastwood Field. The Scrappers secured the three-game sweep over the Black Bears on Sunday afternoon with a score of 10-6.
Mahoning Valley took an early lead through the first two innings of play, including a four-run inning in the second off Bears' starting pitcher, Jarvis Evans, Jr. The Scrappers already held a 2-0 lead when SS Sean Tillmon sent a fly ball over the left center field wall for a three-RBI home run put the Scrappers up 5-0. Evans (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs off four hits in his two-inning appearance.
West Virginia countered with a run in the top of the third when 2B Blaze Brothers stole second base. When the ball was thrown in that direction, CF Haven Mangrum broke for the plate and managed to get the Bears on the board, 5-1.
Mahoning Valley tacked on an additional run in the fourth inning via a wild pitch from Black Bears reliever Jeremy Cook that allowed RF Mark Herron to score.
The Bears cut the deficit to two in the top of the fifth inning when SS Brandon Dieter singled to right to bring home Christian Dunn and Haven Mangrum. But like the previous two nights, Mahoning Valley quickly retaliated. DH Owen Jackson scored on a balk by Black Bears pitcher Branden Noriega, followed by two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Heading into the sixth, the Scrappers led the Bears, 9-3.
Keenan Taylor tried to kickstart some momentum for the Bears in the seventh inning with a three-run moonshot to left field that pulled West Virginia within three runs for the second time in the ballgame, but West Virginia could not cut the lead any further. Mahoning Valley would go on to score an additional run in the bottom of the inning to end the game with a score of 10-6.
West Virginia falls to 2-8 on the season and returns home for a three-game series against the State College Spikes beginning on Tuesday. June 14 at 6:35 p.m. Due to MLB Draft League rules, Tuesday's game will now be seven innings in length.
