Scrappers Rally Late But Fall to Muckdogs, 7-5

Niles, OH - The Mahoning Valley Scrappers rallied and loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but came up just short as the Batavia Muckdogs won game two of this three game series 7-5 tonight at Eastwood Field.

The Scrappers fell to 25-34 on the season, while the Muckdogs improved to 32-25.

Michael Goodnight picked up the loss for the Scrappers lasting just 2.2 innings, giving up six runs on five hits and striking out three.

John Gast picked up his fourth win of the season for the Muckdogs pitching five innings, giving up three runs on six hits and striking out five.

Keith Butler gave up a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, but got of trouble to record his third save of the season for Batavia.

The Scrappers were led offensively by Diego Seastrunk who went 4-4 with a double, a RBI and two runs scored.

The Muckdogs erupted in the top of third inning to break a scoreless tie scoring six runs off Goodnight. The six-run third proved to be the difference as the Muckdogs never trailed.

Batavia added a run in the top of the fifth inning on a Victor Sanchez RBI double that chased home Adam Melker and made the score 7-0.

The Scrappers answered in the bottom of the frame when Chase Burnette doubled to lead off the inning to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. He later scored on a Seastrunk double. The Scrappers scored two more times in the inning to cut the lead to 7-3.

Mahoning Valley continued to chip away in the bottom of the eighth inning as Nick Bartolone doubled off reliever Chase Reid to score Tyler Cannon and make it 7-4.

Reid was replaced by Keith Butler in the bottom of ninth inning. After getting Burnette to pop out to start the inning, Butler allowed a single to Seastrunk and the Scrappers had a runner. Kevin Rucker later walked with two out to put runners on first and second.

Cannon came up next and singled to chase home Seastrunk and cut the Batavia lead to two at 7-5. After a pinch hit Brian Heere single, the bases were loaded for the top of the order and Carlos Moncrief, but Butler got him to strike swinging to end the threat and give the Muckdogs the win.

The Scrappers and Muckdogs will play the rubber match of this three-game series tomorrow night. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
