New Jersey Cardinals News Release
Cirilo Cumberbatch had 2 hits and 2 RBIs and Jensen Lewis pitched 6 strong innings as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians) defeated the New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) 8-2 Thursday night at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey. The loss dropped the Cardinals to .500 at 25-25, while the Scrappers improved to .500 at 25-25. Lewis remained undefeated on the season at 4-0 as Mahoning Valley has won the first two games of a three game series. Starter Zack Zuercher took the loss to fall to 4-5.
The Cards got on the board first in the bottom of the 2nd when Matt Wilkerson launched a one-out solo homerun to right-center field for the early 1-0 lead and his team-leading 7th homerun. But Lewis would settle down and limit the Cardinals to just 4 hits over his six innings.
Zuercher was in control early, as he allowed only one walk through the first three innings, before Jose Constanza led of the fourth with a bunt single for the Scrappers first hit. Zuercher then did not allow a hit until the sixth, when Mahoning Valley broke through for 5 runs.
Jose Chavez led off with a single to center and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Constanza walked, and Matthew Fornasiere followed with an RBI single to right to put runners on the corners. Omar Casillas ripped an RBI single for the 2nd Scrapper run, before Chris Clem was hit with a pitch to load the bases. Cards manager Mark DeJohn went to the bullpen, but reliever Jessen Grant gave up a two-run single to Cirilo Cumberbatch and an RBI single to right fielder Chad Longworth to extend the Mahoning Valley lead to 5-1.
Mahoning Valley added two runs in the eight off of reliever Michael Repole and tacked on the final run in the ninth against Jose Mendez, a position player DeJohn called upon in order to rest his bullpen.
Matthew Haynes worked three innings for his second save.
New Jersey and Mahoning Valley wrap up their only series of the season on Friday, August 11. Game time is scheduled for 7:15. Chris Clem (0-0, 7.04) is set to make his first start of the season after appearing in 7 games out of the bullpen for the Cardinals. Fridays game also features a firework extravaganza courtesy of Region Oil, Burnham Oil, & the New Jersey Herald. The show will commence immediately following the final out of the game.
