Scouts Canada - Oshawa Area Hosts Skate For Scouts

December 6, 2009 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Oshawa Generals News Release

0SHAWA- The Oshawa Scouting Area will be hosting an open to the public Skate Event at Legends Centre on December 27th. The Oshawa Area has been operating the Scouting Program since 1909 just two years after the birth of the Scouting movement in England, founded by Lt. Gen. Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell.

To help mark this milestone, the Oshawa Area is looking to be more visible and out in the community this year. The Skate will help us accomplish a few goals of scouting, first to show the community that we are still very alive and providing an outstanding program for both Boys and Girls. Second, it will allow us to give back to the community that supports us by providing this great event free of charge and for all to enjoy. Lastly, through our community sponsors we will be able to raise money to help provide our program to families of Oshawa that are mostly in need.

The Skate for Scouts will be held at Legends Centre in North Oshawa, starting at 6:30 pm and continue until 9:30 pm. Come out and meet some Oshawa Generals Players, get your picture taken with the Olympic Torch and have a blast on one of the three ice pads for our event.

Scouts Canada is the country's largest youth movement serving over 102,000 members nation-wide for over 100 years. Come out and join us for a fun filled evening.

"We are proud to be the largest youth group in Canada" says Mike Hurley, Area Commissioner for Oshawa and Courtice with Scouts Canada. "There have been many youth and leaders whose lives have been enriched by the skills they learned, trips and adventures they went on while participating in our program over the last 100 years. Scouting offers the most diverse youth skills and leadership training program anywhere in Canada. It is by far the most cost effective youth organization available today." he adds.

The Oshawa Area is steeped in a rich history that is supported by the number of events provided for Beavers on up to Ventures and Rovers. They are community minded, having been active supporters through ScouTREES, Pitch-In Week and other conservation projects for over 50 years.
