New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[ RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-For the seventh straight game, the Scorpions came out on top with a 5-1 victory over Odessa. The win moved the Scorps to within four points of first place.
Aaron MacInnis returned to the lineup and made his presence known. He raced to a loose puck and launched a shot towards the net while against the boards. Chris Robertson was parked in front and tipped the puck through the legs of the goalie, giving the Scorpions a 1-0 lead.
Early in the second period the Scorpions added to their lead. Ray Ortiz stuffed home a rebound on initial shots from Tim Vitek and Ross McCain.
Odessa mounted a comeback attempt when newcomer Kevin Wilson scored his second goal of the year. Over the next few minutes the Jackalopes continued the momentum but were shutdown repeatedly by goaltender Mike Minard.
The Scorpions took over for good late in the second period. Robertson used a Blair Stayzer screen and netted his second goal of the game at the 18:05 mark of the second period. With less than a minute left in the middle frame, rookie David Simoes scored his first professional goal, giving the Scorps a 4-1 lead.
New Mexico came out and again established the tone with physical play. The scoring would end when Stayzer delivered a perfect pass to Dominic Osman who scored his 19th goal of the season at the 17:54 mark of the third period.
It was a full team effort for the Scorpions on Friday night. The victory came despite not a single point from the top four Scorps scorers of Hartinger, Macdonald, Stephens and Reeder.
Following the game, the Scorpions auctioned of the special American Cancer Society jerseys that were worn during the game. A portion of the proceeds from the live auction will go to benefit cancer research.
On Saturday, Special Olympics will be recognized when the Scorpions host Wichita. The first 1,500 children inside the Santa Ana Star Center receive a Jr. Jersey courtesy of Peoples Mortgage.
