Scorpions Grab Eighth Straight Victory
January 19, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-In dramatic fashion, the Scorpions scored an overtime victory over Wichita 3-2 Saturday night. Aaron MacInnis' extra session goal gave the Scorps their eighth straight win.
New Mexico wore their brand new black alternate jerseys for the first time and they brought them luck. Konrad Reeder found Blair Stayzer in front of the net. Stayzer was able to tip it up and into the net giving the Scorps the 1-0 lead.
Defense dominated the first half of the second period as shots were blocked and saves were made. Mitch Stephens' great stick work in the neutral zone started a Scorps rush. Konrad Reeder's shot hit the cross bar, but the puck ricocheted to Craig Macdonald who threw the puck into the net, doubling the New Mexico lead at the 15:28 mark.
The Thunder made their first strike of the game two minutes later. Kyle Bruce took a wrist shot that beat Andrew Martin's glove, making it a 2-1 contest.
Wichita would tie the game up after being awarded a long power play. Shawn Skiehar was sent off for five minutes for boarding at the 1:56 mark of the third period. Cedric Bernier scored his first goal of the season at the 4:37 mark, tying the game at two.
The Scorpions thought they won the game with just over two minutes to go in regulation. MacInnis launched a shot from the red line, towards the boards and into the net. The goal was disallowed because it hit an official and not another player before it went into the goal (CHL Rule 78.5.3).
The Scorpions head to the road next week. Tuesday the trip starts in Arizona at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard on 610 The Sports Animal. New Mexico then heads to Odessa and Amarillo for games on Friday and Saturday.
The next home game will be Tuesday, January 29th when Arizona visits the Santa Ana Star Center. The game starts a stretch of seven straight home games for the Scorpions.
