
Bucks Lose Third Straight Game

AUSTIN, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League fell to the Austin Ice Bats 2-1 Saturday in front of a sold out crowd of 1,900 fans at the Chaparral Ice Arena.
The Bucks, who outshot the Ice Bats 33-28, have lost three games in a row (all in regulation), and fall to 26-11-2 (54 points).
The two teams played to a scoreless first period, as both goaltenders were perfect. The Bucks outshot the Ice Bats 13-10, with Kevin Beech stopping all 10 Austin shots, and Doug Groenstege setting aside all 13 Laredo attempts.
Both teams came up empty on two power-plays in the period.
Austin took the lead as they scored two goals in the final three minutes of the second period.
The Ice Bats made it 1-0 at the 16:49 mark as they struck for a power-play goal. Ted Vandermeer deflected a Jason Tessier pass in past Beech from just in front of the net.
Austin made it 2-0 with just 58 seconds left in the period. Mike Bartlett took the puck in the neutral zone and had a two-on-none break, then passed it to Brendan Cook on the left side of the crease to put it past Beech.
The Ice Bats (12-23-1) outshot the Bucks in the period 11-8.
Laredo (10-7-2 on the road) cut the Austin lead to 2-1 just 3:58 into the third period as James Hiebert tipped in a Jeff Bes shot from the point. It was Hiebert's 20th goal of the season, with Bes picking up his 37th assist. Serge Dube also picked up the assist.
The Bucks had a chance to tie the game up as they went on a power-play with 1:30 left in the game. Laredo then pulled Beech to have a six-on-four advantage, but failed to tie the game.
