SCORPIONS RECAP

SCORPIONS 6, EL PASO 2 – The Scorpions scored three times in each of the second and third periods to take a 6-2 win over El Paso on Wednesday at Tingley Coliseum. Chris Richards scored twice while Arturs Kupaks added a shorthanded goal and two assists. Ben Gorewich chipped in three helpers for the Scorpions.

ODESSA 4, SCORPIONS 2 – The Jackalopes erased a 2-0 deficit to stop the Scorpions 4-2 on Friday. Peter Ambroziak added a shorthanded goal late in the first period while Ben Gorewich tallied 18 seconds into the second stanza. But the Jackalopes rallied with two shorthanded goals by Greg Gatto, including the game-winner with 5:41 left in the third period. Luciano Caravaggio stopped 29 shots in goal for the Scorpions.

SAN ANGELO 6, SCORPIONS 3 – The Saints led 3-1 after the first period and despite numerous comeback attempts by the Scorpions, San Angelo held on for a 6-3 win in front of 10,054 fans at Tingley Coliseum on Saturday. Adam Robbins, Chris Richards and Jasmin Roy all scored for the Scorpions, but two goals each from Steve Roberts and Jarrett Metz were too much to overcome.

SCORPIONS 3, EL PASO 2 – Jasmin Roy broke a 2-2 tie with 6:18 left in the third period to push the Scorpions to a 3-2 win over the Buzzards yesterday. Chris Richards and Kris Currie scored in the first period as the Scorpions led 2-1 until Bob Rapoza tied the game two minutes before Roy's heroics. Luciano Caravaggio stopped 24 shots for the Scorpions, but none bigger than two point-blank saves on Troy Linna during a Buzzards power play in the final 30 seconds.

SCORPIONS MATCH-UPS

EL PASO – The Scorpions and El Paso complete a home-and-home series tomorrow night at Tingley Coliseum, the 11th and final meeting this season. The Scorpions beat the Buzzards twice in the last six days. Jeff Scharf leads the Buzzards with 59 points (22g-37a) but is out of the lineup with an injury. Derrell Upton (21g-34a-55pts) is next in line, followed by Russ Guzior (26g-22a-48pts). Goalies Blaine Russell (8-10-4, 4.20 GAA) and Jamie Ronayne (3-11-0, 4.29 GAA with El Paso, 8-21-1, 4.32 GAA overall) have been rotating starts the past few weeks.

MEMPHIS – The RiverKings took a 5-1 victory from the Scorpions at home on Feb. 7 and the teams meet again south of Memphis this Friday. Don Parsons is making run for his second straight MVP award, leading the CHL with 55 goals and 100 points including 20 points (13g-7a) in his last ten games. Kahlil Thomas is next in line with 65 points (22g-43a). Rookie Jean-Francois Racine (21-9-2, 2.74 GAA) splits time with veteran goalie Mark Richards (14-12-2, 3.12 GAA). The defending champs have their own playoff battle, playing at Oklahoma City tomorrow before three home games on the weekend.

INDIANAPOLIS – The Ice need one point in their final four games to clinch the top seed in the Northern Conference. The Scorpions claimed a 5-2 win at Tingley Coliseum in the only previous meeting this season on Dec. 14. Kevin St. Jacques leads the Ice in scoring with 73 points (20g-53a), followed by Jason Baird (25g-39a-64pts). The Ice have five 20-goal scorers and 32-goal scorer Jared Dumba. Defenseman Bernie John (13g-50a-63pts) is second among CHL blueliners. Goalie Shawn Silver (29-10-3, 2.06 GAA) is one of five finalists for the league's MVP award.

WICHITA – A 700-mile trip to Wichita for the regular season finale awaits the Scorpions on Sunday. New Mexico blanked the Thunder 4-0 on Feb. 22 at home. Wichita has been playing good hockey lately, going 6-4-0 in their last ten games. The line of Travis Clayton (32-57a-89pts, 3rd in CHL), Jason Duda (31g-50a-81pts, T-5th) and Tom Gomes (28g-37a-65pts, T-15th) is a big reason why, as the tandem has combined for 59 points in that ten-game span. Edmonton prospect Kristian Antila (10-7-1, 3.66 GAA) recently returned from the AHL while former Odessa goalie Grant Sjerven is 2-10-0.

STREAKING – Chris Richards has an 11-game point-scoring streak, the second-longest current streak in the league. He has 18 points (6g-12a) in that span. Tyler Baines extended his streak to nine games with an assist yesterday, with 13 points during that stretch. Ben Gorewich had his eight-game spurt halted yesterday.

STINGERS – Kris Currie's goal yesterday was his first since Nov. 23, 2001 when he was with Pensacola of the ECHL... It was the third of his pro career... Arturs Kupaks leads CHL defensemen and is tied for fifth overall with four shorthanded goals... Luciano Caravaggio is sixth in the CHL with a 2.60 GAA... The Scorpions are 4-0-1 in their last five games against El Paso and 6-3-1 this season... New Mexico is up to second in the CHL on the penalty kill at 87.0 percent, trailing only Austin at 88.9 percent... The Scorpions are 3-1-1 against the Northeast Division and 3-3-0 on the road against the Northwest Div.
