CHL Starts Handing out Awards
March 10, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
The Central Hockey League has today announced the recipients of the first two CHL individual awards for the 2002/2003 season. Lubbock Cotton Kings center Anthony Donskov has been recognized as the CHL Man of the Year, while San Angelo Saints President & Chief Operating Officer James T. Cook is the recipient of the Rick Kozuback Award. The Man of the Year honor is "Presented annually to the CHL player adjudged to have best exemplified strong leadership qualities on and off the ice, while making significant and noteworthy humanitarian contributions to his community", while the Rick Kozuback Award is "Presented annually to the CHL owner, front office staff member, coach or player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, determination and commitment to the game, sport and business of hockey."
2nd year pro Donskov has made a significant impact on his adopted community of Lubbock, establishing the "Caps For Courage" program to benefit the Kelsey Logan Angel Fund, founded in May of 1995 by Pam and Brad Logan to honor the memory of their daughter, Kelsey, who died of cancer at the age of 2½. The Fund is solely dedicated to helping those under the age of 18 who suffer from cancer, through assistance with medical costs not covered by insurance, as well as any other additional manners in which to bring joy into the lives of young cancer patients. "Caps For Courage" sells autographed caps for $25.00 with all profits going directly to this most worthwhile cause. To date, the program has raised nearly $4,000.00 dollars. "This award does not mean this program has come to a close," said Donskov. "This is a program that benefits children in the Lubbock area that battle the same problems as children everywhere, and my goal is to have âCaps for Courage' embraced by all CHL teams to benefit children in their market." CHL President Brad Treliving extended his congratulations to Donskov, noting "We have the distinct honor of having numerous players within the CHL who are highly committed to lending their assistance to worthwhile causes, and are most pleased to recognize Anthony's tireless dedication to helping those less fortunate." Also receiving strong consideration for the 2002/2003 CHL Man of the Year award were Memphis All-Star right winger Don Parsons, who established "Parson's Pledge" this season to raise money for the Memphis Oral School for the Deaf and the National Lymphoma and Leukemia Society, and Corpus Christi left winger Ken Goetz, who has made numerous community and fundraising appearances on behalf of the club.
James T. Cook faced numerous challenges in his first season as President and C.O.O. of the Saints, and has done so with utmost class, integrity and dedication. A long time season ticket holder in San Angelo, Cook led a group of investors who assumed control of the club last summer and hurriedly prepared for their first season of play. Cook has been a tireless voice in the San Angelo area promoting Saints hockey and has assisted local groups such as the Boy Scouts, the Concho Valley Girl's Home and the local Mental Health Agency, all while facing several personal health problems prior to the season. Cook's outstanding conduct in working with staff, the media, corporate partners, community leaders and fans has created a positive atmosphere in which to conduct business. "Under the guidance and leadership of Jim Cook, we feel the Saints have set a solid framework for long term success," said Rick Kozuback, President and CEO of Global Entertainment Corporation. "Jim's passion and dedication to conducting business in a outstanding manner has been recognized by his partners within the Central Hockey League."
Tuesday, the CHL will announce the recipients of the Coach and Rookie of the Year awards, followed by the announcements of the Most Outstanding Defenseman award on Wednesday, the Scott Brower Memorial (Most Outstanding Goaltender) award on Thursday, and Most Valuable Player award on Friday.
