Chico Outlaws News Release
Outlaws starting pitcher Javier Ortiz cruised through five innings on Tuesday night against Yuma, but found big time trouble in the sixth inning as the Scorpions tallied five runs in the frame to pull away and win 7-4.
In the bottom of the first, Yuma jumped out on a controversial play. Ron Perodin singled to lead off and then was, at first glance, called out at second base on a fielder's choice by Peter Ramos. The issue at hand was Outlaws shortstop Alex Prieto's handling of the ball on the turn at second.
Prieto had trouble with the switch to throw the ball to first after catching it at second to force out Perodin, dropping the ball during the transfer, causing Scorpions manager Daryl Brinkley to come out to argue the call. The umpires huddled and then reversed the call, allowing Perodin to stay on second and charging an error to Prieto. One batter later, Perodin scored on a Santo De Leon groundout to make it 1-0 Yuma.
Chico got a run of its own off Yuma starter Daryl Arreola (3-0) in the second inning when third baseman Ismael Castro hit a ground rule double that went underneath the fence in the left-field corner. After a Rich Janeway single put Castro on third, Javier Ortiz reached base on a throwing error by De Leon at third base, bringing in Castro to tie the game at one each.
JJ Sherrill gave the Outlaws their second run of the night on a solo homerun to right field, putting Chico up 2-1.
Ortiz (0-2) had only allowed two hits and one unearned run through five innings when he took the hill to start the sixth inning. Scorpions center fielder Ron Perodin, second baseman Peeter Ramos and right fielder Tim Rodridquez all singled to start the frame. Ortiz then hit Yuma's Santo De Leon to bring in one run and tie the game at 2-2.
Jesse Oster came out of the Chico bullpen and gave up consecutive hits, a two-RBI single to Johny Celis and an RBI single from Gabriel Montero made the score 5-2. Catcher Matt Ceriani then hit a single to drive in Celis for the inning's final run, making the score 6-2 Yuma.
The Scorpions got an unearned run in the seventh off Outlaws' reliever David Dinelli with he gave up a one-out single to Rodriguez, who advanced to third base on an errant pick off attempt by Dinelli. While pitching to De Leon, Dinelli then threw a wild pitch, allowing Rodriguez to score and pushing the lead to 7-2.
The Outlaws plated two runs in the eighth to keep things interesting. Scorpions reliever Jordan Muir, pitching on his birthday, gave up walks to Janeway, pinch-hitter John Urick and second baseman Bobby Hill to load the bases. Sherrill then hit a two-RBI single to, closing the gap to 7-4. Sidney Bello came on to relieve Muir and got Mikael Jova to fly out to end the threat.
Ortiz struck out seven Scorpions on the night and along with Jesse Oster, David Dinelli and Josh Dew, combined for a season-high 14 strikeouts. The Outlaws dropped to 16-5 on the year and snapped a four game win streak. Yuma improves to 15-6 and both teams are still in first-place in their respective divisions.
The Outlaws and Scorpions will play game two of this three game series on Wednesday night as leftie Mark McLemore takes the ball for Chico. Game time is set for 6:30 pm PST at Desert Sun Stadium.
