Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - Home sweet home! The Edmonton Capitals have taken full advantage of their first home stand of the season and capped it off with a three game sweep over the Victoria Seals. All three games in the series were one-run games but this time Edmonton did not need a comeback to beat the visitors 5 - 4.
Clint Nageotte started for the Capitals and pitched five innings and allowed three runs on four hits. Mike Hrynio recorded his third win of the season by pitching two innings and allowed one run on two Seals hits. Those two pitchers are tied for the team lead with three wins. Chad Blackwell pitched a scoreless ninth for his third consecutive save. Blackwell now has six saves on the season which leads the Golden Baseball League.
"It was a little easier on us not having to come from behind." described Blackwell. "We know what we can do and we didn't have to worry about getting guys going so much in the bullpen. We calmed down a little bit down there and knew who was going to go in."
That's a four game winning streak for the Capitals who rattled off ten wins over their thirteen game home stand and now have a record of 13 - 10.
"We're just clicking at home." continued Blackwell. "We knew that when we were out on the road and we started a little rough that we just needed to get home and feel comfortable and everybody's doing really well right now. Hopefully we can carry it on this road trip."
The Capitals got on the scoreboard in the first inning with back to back RBI singles by Cliff Brumbaugh and Canadian Matt Rogelstad. The Caps added single runs in the third and fourth innings but the Seals tied the game at four apiece in the top of the sixth inning. The Capitals responded in the bottom of the sixth when Larry Bigbie hit a sacrifice fly that scored Ryan Stevenson. The Capitals were led at the plate by Stevenson who went four for four with two runs scored.
The Capitals will head out on a eleven game road trip starting Friday night in Victoria. Edmonton's climbed back to within five games of North division leading Chico. The Capitals will play three games in Victoria, followed by three in Chico, three in St. George and will wrap up with a pair of games in Calgary. The Capitals will return to TELUS Field on Thursday July 1st and face provincial rivals, the Vipers, on the Capitals' first ever Canada Day Game.
