Orange County Flyers News Release
Orange County twice came back from a two-run deficit in the team's home opener, but the Vipers pulled away in the ninth inning for the 7-5 win over the Flyers on Tuesday night.
Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth, Flyers catcher Jim Goethals drew a leadoff walk, which brought up the rookie pinch hitter David Harris, who did not disappoint in his home debut, blasting a two-run homer to even the game, 5-5.
Calgary broke the tie with two runs in the top of the ninth off Andre Simpson with RBI hits from Luis Taveras and Jonny Kaplan.
Calgary struck first thanks to a Kaplan RBI single in the top of the second inning after Julio Ramirez doubled to lead off the frame. Ramirez would come back in the third inning to do more damage by slamming a two-run shot to put Calgary up 3-1.
Orange County came storming back with a lead off solo home run by Tyler Keeble, getting his third homer this season. Getting his first start of the year at third base, Jimmy Rohan's bat and glove came to play going 4 for 4 at the plate. His biggest hit of the night came in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double to even the game up 3-3.
Matt Durkin received his 2009 Golden Baseball League's Pitcher of the Year award before the game and scattered eight hits over six innings, giving up five runs (four earned) while striking out seven in a no decision. The Vipers starting pitcher Dusty Gober pitched a strong 5 innings striking out 5 and giving up only 3 runs.
The Flyers continue their first home stand of the year tomorrow at 7:05 pm against the Calgary Vipers. Two more games are left in the three game series against the Vipers, while the Yuma Scorpions come into Fullerton for a two-game series Friday and Saturday.
