LAST WEEK:

WED Nov. 1 Youngstown @ SCORPIONS (5-4 WIN OT) 7:35 pm Santa Ana Star Center

The New Mexico Scorpions clinched their first Santa Ana Star victory with a 5-4 overtime win Wednesday night. Aaron MacInnis picked a great time to score his first Scorpions' goal, 1:51 into the extra session.

After three tough games, New Mexico started clicking early. Just 5:20 into the first period, Mike Prpich recorded his first professional goal, giving the Scorpions their first lead of the season. It was also the first time the Scorps' lit the lamp in the first period on the young season.

The Scorpions skated to the locker room with a first period lead in large part due to goalie Brad Smith's play. Smith, making his first professional start, made great save after great save in the first 20 minutes.

The SteelHounds quickly got on the board in the second period when Joey Sewell's wrist shot beat Smith just 48-seconds into the frame. From that point on the game would be back and forth.

Ryan McLeod reclaimed the lead with his fourth goal in as many games in the middle of the second period. Youngstown tied it again three minutes later when Paul Esdale scored his fourth goal of the season.

Again, the Scorpions would take the lead as Mike Falk ripped a power play shot over goalie Brad Roberts' shoulder. It looked like the Scorpions would take their lead into the second break, but Sewell notched his second goal of the night to tie the game for the third time.

Youngstown grabbed their first lead of the game at 8:52 when Mark Johnson banged a rebound goal home. The Scorpions did not back down and Falk answered with his second goal of the night three minutes later.

FRI Nov. 3 Youngstown @ SCORPIONS (3-2 WIN) 7:35 pm Santa Ana Star Center

The New Mexico Scorpions, proud member of the Central Hockey League (CHL), are starting to find out how sweet home can be at the Santa Ana Star Center. For the second time in three nights, the Scorpions powered their way to a 3-2 comeback victory over the Youngstown SteelHounds.

Fans in New Mexico were treated to another exciting CHL battle. Ryan McLeod continued his impressive rookie season with a game winning power play goal.

Undisciplined action for Youngstown proved to be the difference in the contest. With 6:34 remaining in the contest, the Scorpions Bob Kukulka was called for a slash when his stick came across Paul Esdale. Esdale's teammate Marl Johnson came to his aide and stirred it up with Kukulka.

Kukulka never was able to get his gloves off as Johnson threw punches before the linesmen separated the two players. Kukulka was assessed a minor while Johnson collected 17 minutes worth of penalties, five of which gave the Scorpions the power play they needed for the tying and game winning goal.

Before McLeod scored his game winner, newest Scorpion, Konrad Reeder tied it up just 34-seconds before on New Mexico's two-man advantage. Robb Guinn launched a shot from the blue line and Youngstown's David Currie made the initial save but Reeder was on the doorstep for his first Scorpion goal.

The SteelHounds looked like they may take a win from the Scorpions on Friday night when John Wheaton scored his first goal of the season at the 9:26 mark of the third period. Just like Wednesday the Scorpions came back to delight the 4,112 at the Santa Ana Star Center.

After a scoreless first period, the SteelHounds scored first just 2:31 into the second frame when Joey Sewell scored his third goal of the season. The Scorpions would tie it up on the power play in the final minute of the third period with Mike Falk's third goal in two games.
