Scorpions roll past 1st half champs YUMA SUN STAFF REPORTS

CHICO, Calif. -- The Scorpions came up big in the first of a three-game series at Chico, beating the Outlaws 12-9. Yuma (8-1) struck first, beating the first-half champions (3-6). The last time the Scorpions were at Chico they dropped three in a row in the end of June.

Friday night the Scorpions came out scoring twice in the first inning, six in the third and once in the fourth for a 9-0 lead.

Already up 4-0, Jordan Prado had the hit of the night in the third with a three-run double bringing home Maikel Jova, Pete Farina and Hector Bernal to open the lead 7-0.

Down nine runs going into the fourth inning, the Outlaws stayed in the game, scoring nine of the next 12 runs, starting with a two-out home run in the fourth and four more in the sixth. The Scorpions run in the seventh and two in the eighth made the difference in the game.

After giving up those six runs, Scorpions winning pitcher Charles Merricks was relieved in the sixth inning by Matt Saucedo, who pitched three scoreless innings only to allow three in the ninth on a late Outlaw surge.
