New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[ RIO RANCHO, N.M.]- The New Mexico Scorpions, proud member of the Central Hockey League (CHL), got back to their winning ways with a 6-2 victory over Lubbock on home ice Friday night. The win gave the Scorpions points in nine straight games.
It was teddy bear toss night at the Santa Ana Star Center and Mike Falk let the stuffed animals rain down from the stands with his tenth goal of the season 14:17 into the opening frame. The Scorpions lead grew to two when Aaron MacInnins riffled a power play goal to the back of the net.
Lubbock fought back cutting the lead down to one with a bouncing puck goal. Paul McBrien got credit for his first goal of the season as the puck ricocheted off his body and into the net.
The fans were treated to the most exciting play in hockey with 2:08 to go in the first period. Craig Macdonald was awarded a penalty shot, but could not convert. It was the first penalty shot of the year attempted by New Mexico .
The Scorpions kept the momentum as Lance Herauf wrapped a goal into the net with just 17-seconds remaining in the opening frame. Newcomer Ryan VandenBussche was credited with the assist.
The Cotton Kings used an early second period power play to cut the lead back down to one when Mike Carter lit the lamp for the second time this year. Like last time, the Scorpions grabbed momentum back quickly 43-seconds later.
MacInnis found Falk in the neutral and started a three-on-one fast break. Falk looked to pass the puck across, but Lubbock 's Jason Beatty's leg got in the way. Fortunately for the Scorpions the puck deflected off Beatty's leg and into the Cotton Kings' net.
New Mexico extended their lead again as Ryan McLeod won a draw to Lance Herauf. Herauf's shot was initially saved but McLeod was there to put the rebound home, giving the Scorpions a 5-2 lead heading into the second intermission.
The third period was dominated by physical play. Both teams flexed their muscles as the gloves were dropped five different times. The lone offense came off the stick of Matt Frick with under 10-seconds remaining. Jamie Herrington, in his first Scorpions game, won the draw back to Frick who beat goalie J.F. Perras for his first goal of the season.
David Cacciola continued his stellar play in net since being traded to New Mexico . The Scorpions net minder made 25 saves, earning his sixth victory in six games in a Scorpions' jersey.
The Scorpions head to Arizona Saturday for a 7:30 puck drop against the Sundogs. The Scorpions return home on Wednesday, Dec. 27 when Colorado invades the Santa Ana Star Center .
