Youngstown SteelHounds News Release

The Youngstown SteelHounds were looking to extend their winning streak to three games with another victory against Austin but the Ice Bats had other plans handing the Hounds their worse loss at home with a 4-1 score on Saturday night.

Austin set the pace early as John McNabb would net his 14th of the season at 3:10 mark to make it 1-0 Ice Bats. The Bats would keep the pressure on as Julian Smith would score his first of two goals on the evening to make it 2-0 at the end of one period.

The second period would show the only bright spot for the Hounds as Jeff Christian would score his 16th of the season, this one on the power play to cut the deficit to one. The goal would extend the captain's league leading point streak to 12 games. That would be as close as they would get though as Austin goaltender Kevin Couture would slam the door shut making 34 saves on 35 Youngstown Shots in the victory.

The Hounds would hold Austin to a franchise record 17 shots but it was not enough as Ray Smegal would score his first goal of the season at the 15:16 mark of the second period to make it 3-1 for the Ice Bats.

Julian Smith would score his second of the night and seventh of the season on a short handed breakaway to put the nail in the coffin for the Hounds. These two teams are now even at one game a piece in their three game tilt and will play each other again tonight at the Chevy Centre at 7:05pm. The loss drops the Hounds 13-7-5 and will need a victory tomorrow night against the Ice Bats to stay close with Memphis for first place in the Northeast division.
