Scorpions offense stings Dawgs with 16 hits

San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release

SAN DIEGO - One big offensive inning could not make up for the offensive ineptness shown by the Surf Dawgs for the rest of the night and the Scorpion 16-hit onslaught in an 11-4 defeat to Yuma. Yuma (4-3) took the decisive 7th game in a row played by these teams in a home and home series.

Yuma once again started off the scoring. Starting pitcher Chris George (0-1) got Javier Lopez out to start the game but then Henry Calderon doubled to left. Left fielder Billy Malone, who had 4 of the 16 hits, singled home Calderon to make it 1-0 Yuma. George would get Juan Lebron and Jason Dewey on back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. After half an inning, Yuma led 1-0.

In the second inning, Yuma erupted for five runs on four hits, one of which was a two-run home run by third baseman Hector Tena. George would remain in the game, but Yuma 6-0 led after one-and-a-half.

The Scorpions weren't done yet as they tacked on another run in the top of the fourth inning to make it 7-0 but San Diego's bats woke up in the bottom half of the fourth.

In the fourth inning, Scott Goodman and Seth Pietsch, now batting .433, led off with solid singles to begin the rally. Clutch two-out hitting by Matthew Connolly, Justin Moore, and Adam Mandel led to 4 runs and brought the tying run up in the form of Tony Garcia. In a sign that the Surf Dawgs were in for a long night, Garcia struck out to end the threat.

The Scorpions put the game out of reach with two runs in both the seventh and ninth innings. Now, the Long Beach Armada (1-5) make their way into town to face the suddenly struggling Surf Dawgs (3-4) at 7:05 p.m. PST. The four-game set runs through Sunday and the Surf Dawgs expect big crowds for their first weekend series of the year.
