San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release

SAN DIEGO - An overcast night dapened the home team's offense until a late surge in the ninth that ended 90 feet short of a rally and led to inconsistency continuing for the Surf Dawgs.

Starting pitcher Marcos Mendoza (0-2), who was brilliant otherwise, got through the first inning unscathed but walked Richard Quihuis-Bell to start the second. Catcher Jacob Guzman hit a two-run home run to left center to make it 2-0 Scorpions. Mendoza would go on to pitch six full innings allowing two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts.

San Diego got their first run in the bottom of the third inning. Matthew Connolly singled to start the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Johnny Day singled to put runners on first and third with no one out. Mandel grounded into a fielder's choice and Connolly scored to make it 2-1 Yuma. Jorge Perez (2-0) would then get Garcia to fly out to second and Goodman to strike out to end the inning.

Yuma would threaten again in the top of the fifth inning when Lopez singled and then moved to second after Mendoza walked Calderon to put runners on first and second with one out. Malone then hit a broken-bat come-backer to the mound that Mendoza fielded but threw wide of second to make it bases loaded with one out. Mendoza battled back to get Lebron to ground into a 6-3 double play to get out of the inning with no runs allowed.

Joe Safken would replace him in the seventh and got Tena out to start the inning but walked the next batter Pringle. Pringle stole second and then scored on a Calderon single through the right side to make it 3-1 Scorpions. This ended up being the deciding run.

The Surf Dawgs got to weary starter Jorge Perez in the ninth when Nick Guerra doubled to lead off the inning but then Matt Wheatland struck out. Reinking then doubled home Guerra to make it 3-2 Yuma. Justin Moore came in to pinch run for Reinking at second and Yuma brought in Jared Terrebonne to close it down. He got Matthew Connolly to strike out and the Dawgs last hope was Johnny Day. Day took Terrebonne to a full count but ended up flying out to first to end the game.

The final game of the series is tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. PST from Tony Gwynn Stadium. Chris George gets the ball for San Diego and Walt Nolen will throw for the Scorpions.
