Scorpions look for March heatwave

SCORPIONS EVENTS – Tomorrow's game against Tulsa will be 2-for-1 Ticket Night, as all grandstand tickets are available on a 2-for-1 basis now at the Scorpions Team Store, 6300 San Mateo NE or at the Tingley Coliseum box office beginning at 5 p.m. tomorrow. Friday's game against Fort Worth is ABC Seamless Maracas Night to the first 1,000 fans, while Saturday's game against Oklahoma City is New Mexico Lottery Rally Towel Night to the first 1,500 fans.

SCORPIONS PROMOTIONS – Fans who spend $10 or more inside any area GIANT Gasoline and Convenience Store (non-gas purchases) will receive a coupon good for two free grandstand tickets to the Scorpions' game on Friday against Fort Worth. Anybody who purchases two 24 oz. Crystal Springs sport bottles at area Amigo Marts for $1 receives a free grandstand ticket to Saturday's game against Oklahoma City, and the first 2,500 fans who return their non-winning New Mexico Lottery Extreme Green scratchers to the Scorpions will receive a free grandstand ticket to Saturday's game.

SCORPIONS RECAP –

WICHITA 6, SCORPIONS 3 – Wichita scored five times in the first period on Tuesday as they took a 6-3 win over the Scorpions, extending New Mexico's winless streak to three at 0-2-1. Shawn Legault led the Scorpions with a goal and an assist. Matt Mathias also scored, while Brian Barker scored a 5-on-3 shorthanded goal, the first in anybody's recent memory for the Scorpions. The game was a physical affair, with 86 PIM dished out between the two teams.

SCORPIONS 4, COLORADO 3 (SO) – Clint Wensley scored the only goal of the shootout and Danny Lorenz was a perfect 5-on-5 as the Scorpions ended a three-game winless streak with a 4-3 shootout victory over Colorado. The Eagles struck for three goals in a 2:02 span midway through the first period, but goals from third-liners Daryl Moor and Craig Stahl tied the game before the intermission. Mike Oliveira added his 31st goal to start the scoring. Lorenz made 23 saves as the teams played to a 3-3 tie after the first period but were scoreless after that until the shootout.

SCORPIONS 4, AMARILLO 3 – Clint Wensley scored his second straight game-winning goal with 1:42 elapsed in the third period to as the Scorpions battled back from three one-goal deficits to beat Amarillo 4-3 on Friday. Shaun Peet recorded three points (1g-2a) while Mike Oliveira and Matt Mathias each posted a goal and two assists. Danny Lorenz stopped 25 shots for the victory.

COLORADO 4, SCORPIONS 2 – The Eagles broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of goals 1:32 apart in the third period to take a 4-2 win over the Scorpions last night. Daryl Moor scored a shorthanded goal late in the first period and Peter Ambroziak scored 37 seconds into the second for the Scorpions. Danny Lorenz made 24 saves for the Scorpions.

SCORPIONS MATCH-UPS –

TULSA – The Scorpions are 3-0-1 against the Oilers this season, but they will be looking for revenge after Tulsa stole a 5-4 shootout win at home on Feb. 21. The Oilers are 4-0-1 in their last five games, with the four wins coming at home. Jason Bermingham (31g-33a) and Todd Marcellus (25g-39a) are tied for the team lead with 64 points while Dan Gravelle is just behind with 60 points (30g-30a). Veteran Rod Branch (16-14-7, 3.01 GAA) while rookie Tim Kelleher (6-9-4, 2.95 GAA) has started all five games in the Oilers' recent spurt.

FORT WORTH – The Brahmas are last in the CHL with 37 points and currently own an eight-game winless streak at 0-6-2. The Scorpions have won ten straight games against the Brahmas dating back to the 1998-99 season and including a 3-1 road win this season on Nov. 29. Derrell Upton has 25 points in 34 games since a December trade from Amarillo and leads the Brahmas with 44 points (14g-30a). All-Star Chad Woollard is next with 37 points (17g-20a). Rookie Tyler Nilsson (9-16-4, 3.47 GAA) splits the goaltending chores with Erasmo Saltarelli (4-15-5, 3.56 GAA). The Brahmas are 16th of 17 teams in both goals per game (2.45) and goals against per outing (3.63).

OKLAHOMA CITY – Saturday's game marks the first meeting between the teams since the Scorpions' epic 1-0 shootout win on Jan. 3. Marty Standish leads the Blazers with 51 points (18g-33a) while Doug Sheppard is first with 24 goals and second with 48 points. Goalies Boyd Ballard (16-13-2, 2.88 GAA) and Sean Connors (10-10-5, 2.77 GAA) split time between the pipes for Oklahoma City, which hasn't won back-to-back games since taking three in a row from Dec. 16 to 20.

STINGERS – The Scorpions are eight points behind Memphis and Indianapolis, who currently hold the final two Northern Conference playoff spots... They are also seven behind Wichita, who is next in line... The Scorpions have scored six shorthanded goals this season, but Sunday's goal by Daryl Moor was the first by someone other than Mike Oliveira or Brian Barker this season... Shaun Peet's three-point night against Amarillo on Friday was the third of his career... It was Matt Mathias' first multi-point game, as he had a goal and an assist against the Gorillas.
