Scorpions "Light Up" Pennant Race on Early 4th of July

June 28, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Yuma Scorpions News Release

The race for the first-half pennant is heating up in the Golden League's South Division and the Yuma Scorpions are about to "Light Up" the battle in more ways than one.

The Scorpions, who trail Maui by one game in the standings, will host the Tucson Toros on "Fireworks Friday", this Friday, July 2nd at Desert Sun Stadium at 7 pm. Immediately following the game the skies over the stadium will light up with Yuma's only Friday night fireworks display.

"We know how much this event means to our fans and the youngsters who attend the games", said Scorpions vice-president and general manager Peter Young. "Baseball and fireworks, what a great way to kick off the long weekend."

This early Fourth of July display is sponsored by Rx Positive, Coca Cola, Jim McDermott's Lets Fly and the Scorpions Booster Club.

On the field the Scorpions have won six of their last seven games. Right-fielder Timothy Rodriguez continues to lead the league in RBI with 46 while third baseman Santo Deleon sits in fifth place with 32. On the mound, right hander Darryl Arreola leads the team with a perfect 5-0 record and .191 ERA. Gilbert De La Vara is fifth in the league in strikeouts with 34.

The Scorpions face the Toros on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in Tucson before returning for a two game set against the same team on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.

Saturday's game features the second Money Drop of the season. Jim McDermott will be dropping $500.00 in cash and prizes into the outfield from the window of his Cessna. Children will be invited on the first to chase down the cash.
