Maui Takes Series With 6-5 Win

The Tucson Toros the final game of their series with Maui 6-5 after a come from behind win in the 9th by the Na Koa Ikaika.

Maui scored 4 unearned runs in the first inning to take an early 4-0 lead after five errors by the Toros. In the bottom of the frame, Wally Backman Jr. got Tucson on the scoreboard with an RBI single to drive in CF Ron Perodin for the Toros first run of the night.

The Toros continued to answer back in the third inning when RF Lino Garcia crushed a three run homer to left centerfield to tie the game 4-4. Perodin had another great night atop the batting order, going 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored 7th inning RBI double that gave Tucson a 5-4 lead.

Maui fought back in the 9th after scoring two more unearned runs after a throwing error. The error was the 6th recorded by the Toros on the night.

Starter Vince Davis did not get the decision in his solid performance, pitching 6 innings, giving up 5 hits, 4 runs (2 earned), 2 walks and 8 strikeouts. Reliever Andrew Snowdon threw 2 scoreless innings of relief and gave up 1 hit, with 4 strikeouts before passing the ball to Emiliano Fruto. Fruto threw 1 inning and allowed 2 hits, 2 unearned runs and was handed the loss.

The hit streaks for Toros Right fielder Francisco Plasencia, Shortstop Ryan Priddy, First baseman Cristobal Santana and Third basemen Wally Backman Jr. all continued. Plasencia extended his hit streak to 8 games, Priddy is now at 9 games, Santana has hit 12 straight games, and Backman Jr's streak is now at 17, longest for a Toro this season.

The Toros have the day off tomorrow and will return home for a three game series against the Yuma Scorpions starting Tuesday, with a 7:00 p.m. first pitch. The game can be heard live on COOL 1450 AM or video streaming over the Internet at www.tucsontoros.com.
