St. George RoadRunners News Release
ST. GEORGE - The Yuma Scorpions avoided a three-game sweep Thursday night by beating the St. George RoadRunners 6-4 at Bruce Hurst Field.
The loss snapped St. George's winning streak at three and handed the club their first loss at home this year.
Yuma struck for two first-inning runs off RoadRunner starter Luis Gonzalez (L, 1-1). Diover Avila led off the game with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Cleanup hitter Carlos Villalobos plated Avila with an infield single to shortstop. Ismael Castro doubled scoring Villalobos to give Yuma a 2-0 lead.
The advantage pushed to three in the third with an RBI single by William Hernandez.
Scorpion starter Julio Santiago (W, 1-1) held St. George hitless until the fourth inning. A.J. Valentine and Henry Calderon both singled with one out and scored on Jose Rodriguez's laser line drive off the wall in left. The RoadRunners had cut the lead to 3-2.
The Scorps scored the next three runs unanswered with single tallies in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. RBI groundouts by Castro and DH Luis Acuna gave Yuma a 5-2 lead. Castro burned the âRunners again in the seventh with his third run knocked in on the night.
Down 6-2 at the seventh inning stretch, the RoadRunners started to chip away. DH Juan Serrano doubled to lead off the seventh, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when the catcher's throw sailed into left field.
Rodriguez knocked in his third RBI in the eighth with a groundout scoring Calderon.
In the ninth, Yuma turned to their closer Emiliano Fruto who had not given up a hit in his previous two outings. Serrano snuck his second double past the third baseman to begin the frame. Fruto then struck out Ryan Stevenson and Ruddy Yan to set up a battle with Alexis Gomez. On the seventh pitch of the at-bat, Gomez singled to right, but Serrano was gunned down at the plate on a solid throw from W. Hernandez to end the game.
Yuma pounded out 14 hits on the night with four players - Avila, Rodriguez, Villalobos and Hernandez - each having two safeties. St. George had nine hits led by Calderon with three.
The RoadRunners welcome in the Edmonton Capitals for a three-game series over two days beginning Friday night at 7:05pm. STG is scheduled to start RHP Eric Van Slyke (0-1, 13.50) against his former squad.
